Consistent root microbiomes across contrasting habitats in a wild perennial vine

open access: yesPlant Biology, Volume 28, Issue 6, Page 1880-1898, October 2026.
Communities of bacteria and fungi associated with the roots are similar across diverse habitats in a wild plant. Abstract While we are beginning to understand that the plant microbiome is important for plant health, we still lack information about how plant microbiomes are shaped across environments and how they influence plant performance, in ...

Evidence for the continental origin of Pliocene deposits in the central Baja California peninsula, Mexico, and implications for controls on biodiversity

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 73, Issue 6, Page 2488-2518, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Previous studies have documented genetic divergence within the last few million years between northern and southern populations of terrestrial plants and animals along the Baja California peninsula, with many studies hypothesising that the divergence is due to an ancient seaway that crossed the central peninsula and created a physical barrier ...

Delivery, Persistence, and Functional Response of dsRNA in Acyrthosiphon pisum: Progress and Remaining Barriers

open access: yesArchives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology, Volume 123, Issue 1, September 2026.
Aphids efficiently ingest dsRNA, which persists in the midgut but is rapidly degraded by aphid nucleases when unprotected. Chitosan and LDH‐based formulations improve dsRNA stability, triggering RNAi activation. Despite this protection, gene knockdown remains variable, though the RNAi machinery is consistently activated.

Predicted Global Redistribution of Pyrophilous Beetle Melanophila acuminata (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) Under Climate Change

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Melanophila acuminata's core suitable habitat is projected to shrink by ~36% and shift northwestward under high‐emission scenarios, with Northern Europe and Canada as key future conservation priorities. ABSTRACT The pyrophilous beetle Melanophila acuminata is a decomposer of freshly burned wood, playing a critical role in nutrient cycling within forest

The Most Effective Pollinators Predict Intraspecific Floral Color Diversity Across an Edaphic Matrix

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
A generalist‐pollinated plant endemic to rock outcrops recently expanded to weedy roadside meadow populations where it exhibited reduced flower color variation and less pigmented flowers. A relationship between flower color and pollinator community composition, and an especially strong link between color and relative abundance of the most effective ...

Using DNA Metabarcoding and Citizen Science to Assess the Diet of Owned Domestic Cats

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Various methods have been attempted to quantify hunting and consumption of wild prey by domestic cats, but molecular analysis of their scat using DNA metabarcoding has rarely been attempted. In this study, we relied on owner‐collected scats (n = 32) from litterboxes and backyards to test whether this methodology could be used to detect ...

Bioactive compounds in insects—Composition, extraction, functionality, food applications, and safety concerns

open access: yesFood Biomacromolecules, Volume 3, Issue 3, Page 620-645, September 2026.
This review synthesizes 94 studies (2000–2025) exploring edible insects as sustainable sources of peptides, lipids, and chitin. Utilizing “green” extraction, these bioactives offer antioxidant and antimicrobial benefits for functional foods. However, addressing safety concerns like allergenicity and heavy metals through standardized frameworks remains ...

Large Regional Variation in Global Impacts of Agriculture on Terrestrial Insects and Other Arthropods

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 3, September 2026.
We show that impacts of agriculture on arthropod biodiversity are notably less negative in Europe than in other regions, which we find is driven by a degraded baseline, a selection bias of reference sites, and novel species compositions in agriculture that favour widespread habitat generalists and non‐native species.

The Cephalic Morphology of Protopselaphus—A Phylogenetic Connecting Link in Staphylinidae (Coleoptera)

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 9, September 2026.
The head morphology including soft tissues of an ethanol‐preserved specimen of Protopselaphus was examined using synchrotron‐µCT and SEM and interpreted with respect to their possible phylogenetic implications. Our findings strongly support the monophyly of Protopselaphinae + Pselaphinae, with adult cephalic synapomorphies including the vertical ...

See No Weevil: Dark Data Patterns in Repositories and Their Implications for Conservation Planning

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 3, September 2026.
Reliable species distribution data are essential for conservation planning, yet for many invertebrates, these data are incomplete or inaccessible. Institutional collections hold millions of insect specimens, but most of the data and metadata are undigitised ‘dark data', limiting their integration into global biodiversity platforms.
