The Biology of Oreochromis niloticus in a Polluted Canal

Ecotoxicology, 2003
In the present investigation, length-weight relationship, condition factor, age, growth, mortality, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and fecundity of tilapias (Bolti in Arabic): Oreochromis niloticus, from Shanawan drainage canal (SDC), Al-Minufiya Province, Egypt, were studied.

Energy metabolism in Oreochromis niloticus

Aquaculture, 1989
A series of experiments was carried out to study the energy metabolism of Oreochromis niloticus. During starvation the energy loss of the fish was 25 kJ kg−0.8 d−1 (54 kJ kg−1 d−1). Maintenance requirement for energy amounted to 57 kJ ME kg−0.8 d−1 (116 kJ ME kg−1 d−1). Apparent utilization of metabolizable energy (ME) below maintenance requirement was

Effects of Prolactins on the Chromatophores of the Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1993
Using isolated scales and split-fin preparations of the tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, the effects of a pair of prolactins of the tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus (tPRL177 and tPRL188) and of ovine prolactin (oPRL) on chromatophores were studied in vitro. These peptides caused melanosome aggregation and dispersion of xanthosomes, especially in the split

Mercury exposure in the freshwater tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

Environmental Pollution, 2010
Mercury (Hg) can be strongly accumulated and biomagnified along aquatic food chain, but the exposure pathway remains little studied. In this study, we quantified the uptake and elimination of both inorganic mercury [as Hg(II)] and methylmercury (as MeHg) in an important farmed freshwater fish, the tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, using (203)Hg ...

Gene transfer in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Aquaculture, 1988
Abstract The microinjection of the human growth hormone gene into the germinal disc and the development of 90-day live transgenic tilapia are reported. Three different spawns, treated 10 min, 21–24 h or 40–43 h after spawning, were used. For microinjection a linear 4.0 kb EcoRI-DNA fragment containing the mouse metallothionein-I promoter (mMT-I ...

Innervation of testes in the tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

Aquaculture, 1995
Abstract The innervation of the testes of Oreochromis niloticus was examined immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally. Many thick nerve bundles, which penetrate the testes via the mesorchium, are distributed in the wall surrounding the efferent duct. The neurons appear to terminate at the surface of smooth muscle cells in the efferent duct wall.
