Early metastasis is characterized by Gr1+ cell dysregulation and is inhibited by immunomodulatory nanoparticles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Breast cancer metastasis is associated with myeloid cell dysregulation and the lung‐specific accumulation of tumor‐supportive Gr1+ cells. Gr1+ cells support metastasis, in part, through a CHI3L1‐mediated mechanism, which can be targeted and inhibited with cargo‐free, polymeric nanoparticles.

Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...

Organ Donation: Gauging Perception, Interest, and Clarifying Misconceptions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Around 120,000 people currently need a lifesaving organ transplant in the United States. On average, 22 people die each day while waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. In 2011, over $34 billion dollars were spent on dialysis patients with end-stage

Piezo1 channels enhance anabolic signaling activation induced by electrical stimulation of cultured myotubes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
By using an electrical pulse stimulation (EPS)‐based in vitro exercise model and chemical activation/inhibition of mechanosensitive Piezo1 channels, we explored changes in protein synthetic response in cultured C2C12 myotubes. Our data showed that application of Piezo1 activator (Yoda1) during EPS significantly enhances the rate of protein synthesis in

The Role of Privacy Guarantees in Voluntary Donation of Private Health Data for Altruistic Goals [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
The voluntary donation of private health information for altruistic purposes, such as supporting research advancements, is a common practice. However, concerns about data misuse and leakage may deter people from donating their information. Privacy Enhancement Technologies (PETs) aim to alleviate these concerns and in turn allow for safe and private ...
