Tisućljećima je poljoprivreda bila utemeljena na sličnim principima kao sadašnja ekološka poljoprivreda. Izvor hranjiva u obliku gnojiva tlu su se dodavala samo putem organskih gnojiva životinjskog porijekla ili su indirektno taložile poplave rijeka koje su donosile hranjive tvari na površinu tla.
