Abstract The rhythm of speech can be defined from two different standpoints: a metric one and a rhythmic one. Considered as an assimilation tendency involving the regulation of intervals, speech rhythm becomes a metric concept; considered as a dissimilatory tendency involving the production of events, it becomes a rhythmic concept.
