Franz Joseph Gall on God and religion: "Dieu et Cerveau, rien que Dieu et cerveau!" [PDF]
Abstract Franz Joseph Gall's (1758–1828) doctrine of many faculties of mind with corresponding cortical organs led him to be accused of materialism, fatalism, and even atheism. Yet little has been written about the specific charges he felt forced to respond to in Vienna, while visiting the German States, or in Paris, where he published his books.

Franz Joseph Gall's non-cortical faculties and their organs. [PDF]
Abstract Franz Joseph Gall (1758–1828) is remembered for his claims that behavior results from a large number of independent mental faculties, and that these faculties are associated with cortical organs. Apart from the 26 faculties he localized in the cerebrum, he also recognized one faculty (reproductive drive) in the cerebellum.

Computational complexity as a potential limitation on brain-behaviour mapping. [PDF]
Robust one‐to‐one mappings between the sensory stimulus and the behavioural level (top and bottom) do not imply that mappings can be found between the behavioural and the neural levels or the stimulus and neural levels, that is, within the inverted hourglass.

But the nature and extent of functional localization in the human brain have been subjects of fierce theoretical debate since the 19th Century. In this essay, I first examine how concepts of functional localization have changed over time. I then analyze contemporary challenges

Origins of Organic Chemistry and Organic Synthesis
The origins of organic chemistry and organic synthesis started in the middle ages, long before molecular compositions were known. Paradigm shifts caused by Lavoisier, Chevreuil, Wöhler, Liebig, Kolbe and Berthelot are highlighted. The graphic shows some early key organic molecules, but although synthesis and analysis had become well established ...
