Fractionation of wheat straw by prehydrolysis, organosolv delignification and enzymatic hydrolysis for production of sugars and lignin

open access: yesBioresource Technology, 2012
-Wheat straw was fractionated using a three-step biorefining approach: (1) aqueous pretreatment for hemicellulose prehydrolysis into sugars, (2) organosolv delignification, and (3) enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis into glucose. Prehydrolysis was applied to

An IR study of organosolvent lignin

Russian Journal of Applied Chemistry, 2004
The functional composition of lignin recovered from spruce wood and treated with alkali in aqueous and aqueous-ethanol medium and that of lignins recovered from alkaline cooking solutions in the presence of ethanol were studied by IR spectroscopy. The influence of ethanol on the content of the main functional groups in lignin was examinated.

Photocatalytic depolymerization of organosolv lignin into valuable chemicals

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2021
Catalytic conversion of lignin to certain aromatic compounds has been extensively studied but still has great challenges. Photocatalytic depolymerizing lignin is a very promising method to obtain valuable chemicals. Herein, Zn4In2S7 (ZIS)-based photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by simply combining ZIS and graphene oxide (GO). Photocatalyst ZIS-

The carboxymethylation of organosolv and kraft lignins

Wood Science and Technology, 1980
Kraft and ethanol organosolv lignins from Picea abies and Fagus sylvatica were carboxymethylated with bromoacetic acid. Of the total hydroxyl groups in the lignins, 60–70% were carboxymethylated. The reaction led to an increase of the number-average molecular weights.

Graft Pulping in Organosolv Systems

Journal of Wood Chemistry and Technology, 1992
ABSTRACT It has been previously demonstrated that free radicals are produced in the delignification of wood. These free radicals can be utilized to initiate grafting of vinyl polymers to the wood pulp. This simultaneous delignification and graft copolymerization has been referred to as graft pulping. The grafting of a variety of vinyl monomers to aspen

Ammonium sulfide organosolv pulping

Wood Science and Technology, 1983
The use of ammonium sulfide in aqueous ethanol and methanol was investigated for pulping of wood. Hemlock chips required 21% ammonium sulfide (equivalent to 19% Na2O) at 180°C to become delignified to the kappa range 35–50. The yields exceeded those of conventional kraft pulps by 14% on dry wood basis. Over 75% of the original glucomannan was recovered

Organosolv Pretreatment of Sorghum Stalks Using Glycerol

2021
Glycerol is a promising low-cost solvent for biomass pretreatment since a large amount of glycerol is generated as a by-product in the biodiesel industry. Pretreatment is a method of disintegration of the recalcitrant structure of biomass to enhance the accessibility of cellulose and hemicelluloses to enzymes for complete saccharification.

Base‐catalyzed organosolv pulping of jute

Journal of Chemical Technology & Biotechnology, 2003
AbstractJute fibers were pulped using a novel caustic soda and ethanol–alkali (EtOH–NaOH) pulping process with the aim of minimizing problems associated with conventional chemical pulping. The effects of reaction conditions on the pulp yield, degree of delignification and selected physical properties were evaluated.

Hydrothermal conversion of wood, organosolv, and chlorite pulps

Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery, 2019
In this work, beech wood has been submitted to fractionation and hydrothermal liquefaction in order to produce fermentable carbohydrates. Fractionation either by ethanol organosolv or by sodium chlorite/acetic acid (SC/AA) treatment allowed obtaining delignification yields of 50 and 91 wt.% respectively.
