Flower eDNA reveals diverse and highly specific arthropod communities in a forest. Using sentinel plants across a gradient of forest density and tree species composition, we show that forest structure features (particularly those related to light availability) drive flower‐visiting arthropod richness.

Tardigrades and oribatid mites in bryophytes from geothermally active lava fields (Krafla, Iceland) and the description of Pilatobius islandicus sp. nov. (Eutardigrada) [PDF]
In polar regions, apart from tundra and glaciers, geothermally active areas with elevated temperatures are important elements of ecosystems. One such geothermally active region characterized by mosaic ecosystems and vast areas covered by recent lava ...

Oribatid assemblies of tropical high mountains on some points of the “Gondwana-Bridge” – a case study [PDF]
This work is the first part of a series of studies, which introduces the methodological possibilities of coenological and zoogeographical indication and – following the climate, vegetation and elevation zones – the pattern-describing analysis of the main

Activity and Diversity of Collembola (Insecta) and Mites (Acari) in Litter of a Degraded Midwestern Oak Woodland [PDF]
Litter-inhabiting Collembola and mites were sampled using pitfall traps over a twelve-month period from four sub-communities within a 100-acre (40-ha) oak-woodland complex in northern Cook County, Illinois.

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Soil food webs, driven by complex interactions among plants, microbes and invertebrates, are crucial for carbon and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Over the last decade, it has become evident that forests dominated by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) or ...

The microanatomy of several oribatid and one acaridid mite was studied to determine the role of free cells (haemocytes) in mites. Mites from the field as well as laboratory cultures were observed and analyzed histologically using Masson triple stain. The

Uncovering the predation habits of small arthropods such as mites can be a major challenge, as direct observations are not always feasible in natura. Therefore, PCR‐based analyses of gut content, or body content when gut dissection is not applicable, are

Investigating soil mesofauna cryptic diversity: Current challenges and perspectives
Abstract Cryptic species lacking distinct morphological features are widespread among soil fauna, including such functionally significant groups as springtails, mites and enchytraeids. Their presence, diversity and biomass may impact ecosystem services provided by belowground ecosystems.

Ground‐Dwelling Spider Community Responses to Forest Management in a Mediterranean Oak Forest
The effect of two alternative forest management practices on spider community were tested in a Quercus pubescens forest. Negative effects were observed as soon as 25% thinning, while wood residue retention had little effects on spiders. Pardosa saltans, the dominant species of our data set, appears to be a suitable candidate for a sentinel species ...
