Male song repertoire size and syllable sharing of oriental great reed warblers, acrocephalus orientalis

open access: yesAnimal Cells and Systems, 2009
Abstract The size of song repertoires mainly provides evidence for explaining sexual selection for female choice as well as male‐male competition. We investigated the role of oriental great reed warbler songs (Acrocephalus orientalis) of breeding territorial males.

Heterospecific alarm-call recognition in two warbler hosts of common cuckoos [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
International audienceSpecies facing similar selection pressures should recognize heterospecific alarm signals. However, no study has so far examined heterospecific alarm-call recognition in response to parasitism by cuckoos.

Hawk mimicry does not reduce attacks of cuckoos by highly aggressive hosts

open access: yesAvian Research, 2018
Background Resemblance to raptors such as hawks (Accipiter spp.) is considered to be an adaptive strategy of cuckoos (Cuculus spp.), which has evolved to protect cuckoos against host attacks.

Explaining variation in brood parasitism rates between potential host species with similar habitat requirements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Host specialization evolved in many parasite-host systems. Evolution and maintenance of host specificity may be influenced by host life-history traits, active host selection by the parasite, and host anti-parasite strategies. The relative importance of

The Effects of Anthrophony on Song Traits in European Robins (Erithacus rubecula)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
Our study investigated how anthrophony affected birdsong by comparing European robin songs from urban and rural populations in Midlothian, Scotland. The minimum frequency showed a decreasing pattern in rural robins, but remained higher and constant in urban robins, which also had longer, less complex songs with narrower frequency ranges.

Have Asian koels evolved egg mimicry with any of their hosts?

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2025, Issue 6, November 2025.
The Asian koel Eudynamys scolopaceus is a generalist brood parasite that exploits a diverse array of host species across Asia. A previous study using avian visual modeling found no evidence that koels had evolved eggs that mimic the eggs of one of their oldest known hosts, the house crow Corvus splendens, or that they had host‐specific egg types when ...
