Compression of Textual Column-Oriented Data
Column-oriented data are well suited for compression. Since values of the same column are stored contiguously on disk, the information entropy is lower if compared to the physical data organization of conventional databases. There are many useful light-weight compression techniques targeted at specific data types and domains, like integers and small ...

The intervertebral joints II: The facet joints
The anatomy of the facet joints, also known as the zygapophyseal, apophyseal or lateral intervertebral joints, is described in detail. Particular reference is made to the changing orientation of the articular facets in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar ...

Relationship between the Metallicity of the Circumgalactic Medium and Galaxy Orientation [PDF]
We investigate the geometric distribution of gas metallicities in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around 47, z < 0.7 galaxies from the “Multiphase Galaxy Halos” Survey.

Pyramid Histogram of Double Competitive Pattern for Finger Vein Recognition
Finger vein is a new and secure biometric for personal authentication due to its line-structure network with abundant local and orientation features. However, these features cannot be well represented by the existing local descriptors.

Compression of Very Sparse Column Oriented Data [PDF]
Column oriented databases store columns contiguously on disk. The adjacency of values from the same domain leads to a reduced information entropy. Consequently, compression algorithms are able to achieve better results. Columns whose values have a high cardinality are usually compressed using variations of the LZ method.

Automated Reconstruction of Three-Dimensional Fish Motion, Forces, and Torques. [PDF]
Fish can move freely through the water column and make complex three-dimensional motions to explore their environment, escape or feed. Nevertheless, the majority of swimming studies is currently limited to two-dimensional analyses.

Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...

Function‐driven design of a surrogate interleukin‐2 receptor ligand
Interleukin (IL)‐2 signaling can be achieved and precisely fine‐tuned through the affinity, distance, and orientation of the heterodimeric receptors with their ligands. We designed a biased IL‐2 surrogate ligand that selectively promotes effector T and natural killer cell activation and differentiation. Interleukin (IL) receptors play a pivotal role in
