Enhanced Light Absorption by Horizontally Oriented Diatom Colonies
Through in situ holographic imaging of undisturbed water, diatom colonies with high aspect ratios have been found to exhibit preferential horizontal orientation within high biomass subsurface layers.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

1,1′-(Ethane-1,2-diyl)bis(indoline-2,3-dione)
The molecule of the title compound, C18H12N2O4, is situated on a crystallographic centre of symmetry. The molecule has a zigzag structure, with two parallel symmetry-related indoline-2,3-dione fragments linked by an ethylene group at each N atom.

An Observation-Based Study of Gulf Stream Meander Kinematics Offshore of Cape Hatteras
Gulf Stream (GS) meander structure and propagation offshore of Cape Hatteras are investigated by integrating current measurements from a bottom-moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) with high-frequency radar (HFR) surface current measurements ...

The Column-oriented Data Store Performance Considerations [PDF]
The massive amounts of data processed by information systems raise the importance of detailed database performance analysis. Column-oriented data stores are becoming increasingly popular in big data appliances. This paper identifies database performance factors on the basis of empirical studies on a custom implementation.

We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Column-aware Transaction Management Scheme for Column-Oriented Databases
ABSTRACT The column-oriented database storage is a very advanced model f or large-volume data analysis systems because of its superior I/O performance. Traditional data storages exploit row-oriented storage where the attributes of a record are placed contiguously in hard disk for fast write operations.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve
