High-Precision Robust Broadband Ultrasonic Location and Orientation Estimation [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing, 2009
This paper presents an indoor broadband ultrasonic system for estimation of a mobile device’s 3-D location and three-axis orientation using beacons. It presents the first implementation and characterization of a real frequency hopping spread spectrum ...

Distributed formation control via global orientation estimation [PDF]

open access: yesAutomatica, 2016
In this paper, we propose a novel distributed formation control strategy, which is based on the measurements of relative position of neighbors, with global orientation estimation.

Estimating sensor orientation in cameras

Proceedings 15th International Conference on Pattern Recognition. ICPR-2000, 2002
For most imaging cameras, it is desirable that the sensor plane be perpendicular to the optical axis. Such an orientation ensures that the imaging configuration is perspective and planar scene objects perpendicular to the optical axis can be focussed in their entirety.

Population codes for orientation estimation

Proceedings 15th International Conference on Pattern Recognition. ICPR-2000, 2002
Population coding has become an essential paradigm in cognitive neuroscience over the past decade and is increasingly studied within the neural network community. We investigate the use of population vector decoding for local edge orientation estimation from a discrete set of Gabor filters.

Orientation Estimation Network

2017
We propose the Orientation Estimation Network (OEN) to predict the dominant orientation of the outdoor images and rotate the images to a canonical orientation which is visually comfortable. The OEN outputs the sine and cosine of the angle which are continuous in contrast to the angle.

Pedestrian Orientation Estimation

2014
This paper addresses the task of estimating the orientation of pedestrians from monocular images provided by an automotive camera. From an initial detection of a pedestrian, we analyze the area within their bounding box and give an estimation of the orientation.

Estimating orientation with gyroscopes and accelerometers

Technology and Health Care, 1999
Many systems for recording human movement need some reference from beacons near the subject, such as video cameras. Our goal is to measure human kinematics with sensors that are placed on the segments of interest. This way, experiments in which human movement is recorded are not restricted to a lab.

Scale-adaptive orientation estimation

Object recognition supported by user interaction for service robots, 2003
This paper focuses on directional textures. It provides a new framework for the design of convolution masks dedicated to orientation estimation and an adaptive algorithm which chooses the best mask size for each pixel. The design of the adaptive algorithm is based on the combination of two complementary operators: a gradient based operator which is ...

Application-Oriented Estimator Selection

IEEE Signal Processing Letters, 2015
Designing the optimal experiment for the recovery of an unknown system with respect to the end performance metric of interest is a recently established practice in the system identification literature. This practice leads to superior end performance to designing the experiment with respect to some generic metric quantifying the distance of the ...
