Antibacterial Properties of AquaSun Sol–Gel Coating

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 25, Issue 21, November 2023., 2023
Exposed to a microbial consortium composed of Bacillus aquimaris and Pseudomonas poae, the photocatalytic xerogel AquaSun deposited on shipbuilding steel exerts significant antimicrobial activity of broad scope. These results are promising en route to developing novel antimicrobial coatings of broad applicability.

A new method for the synthesis of 3-hydrazinopropyl trimethoxysilane; pp. 64–68 [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, 2011
A new method for the synthesis of 3-hydrazinopropyl trimethoxysilane is proposed. The method is relatively simple and is based on hydrosilylation like the synthesis of analogous aminosilanes.

“Doing More with Less”: Ni(II)@ORMOSIL, a Novel Sol-Gel Pre-Catalyst for the Reduction of Nitrobenzene

open access: yesCatalysts, 2021
Reduction of nitrobenzene with NaBH4 using zero-valent iron nanoparticles (ZVI-NPs) and NiCl2∙6H2O incorporated in organically modified hybrid silica matrices as ZVI@ORMOSIL and Ni(II)@ORMOSIL catalysts is proposed as a remediation strategy.

Photosensitizer‐Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Combination for Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy†

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, Volume 99, Issue 3, Page 882-900, May/June 2023., 2023
The photodynamic therapy efficiency against cancer can be enhanced by the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), considered ideal nanocarriers for photosensitizers (PSs) due to their high surface areas, simple and cost‐effective synthesis, easy surface functionalization, biocompatibility, and optically transparent to light absorption.

Waste‐free oxidation of alcohols at the surface of catalytic electrodes: What is required for industrial uptake?

open access: yesElectrochemical Science Advances, Volume 2, Issue 5, October 2022., 2022
Abstract The electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols at the surface of stable catalytic electrodes functionalized with aminoxyl radicals results in a waste‐free process affording highly valued carbonyl or carboxylic compounds using an electric current only.

Elliptical Birefringent Rib‐Channel Chirowaveguides for Quasicircularly Polarized Light Applications in Integrated Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, Volume 3, Issue 7, July 2022., 2022
Circular and elliptical polarizations in photonic integrated circuits are difficult to handle due to polarization beating from transverse electric/magnetic polarization decomposition. Engineering a chiral material with a dedicated cross‐sectional shape allows realization of chirowaveguides supporting elliptically polarized guided modes.

Frontier luminous strategy of functional silica nanohybrids in sensing and bioimaging: From ACQ to AIE

open access: yesAggregate, Volume 3, Issue 1, February 2022., 2022
As a novel multifunctional material, fluorescent silica organic–inorganic nanohybrids (FSNs) have been widely applied in sensing and biomedical applications. AIE luminogens (AIEgens) with tunable color have been introduced in silica nanoparticles to develop ultra‐bright FSNs.
