Ornament se podřizuje jakémukoliv materiálu, který může být přitom podstatnou významovou složkou ornamentu. Významovost materiálů a barev je dána historickou tradicí kulturního okruhu a není obecně platná. Doposud je zachyceno asi 5000 ornamentů, které lze podle různých hledisek dělit podle motivů, struktury základního tvaru (čtverec, kruh, trojúhelník)
