Lattice Strain and Built‐In Field Synergistically Boost Urea Oxidation via Dynamic NiOOH Mediation at Multiphase Heterointerfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A sulfur‐doped lignin‐derived carbon‐coated Ni‐NiO‐MoO2 nanorod array was synthesized, exhibiting enhanced UOR performance ‐ due to lattice‐strain and built‐in electric field effects by multiphase heterogeneous interface in Ni‐NiO‐MoO2@SC, excellent corrosion resistance, mass‐transport ability, and long‐term stability (500 mA cm−2 at 1.53 V for 500 h ...

Tail loss compromises immunity in the many-lined skink,Eutropis multifasciata

open access: yes, 2014
Tail autotomy incurs energetic costs, and thus, a trade-off in resource allocation may lead to compromised immunity in lizards. We tested the hypothesis that tailless lizards will favor constitutive innate immunity responses over an energetically costly ...

Toward Pore‐Engineered 3D‐Printed Materials for Sorption Water Harvesting, Interfacial Evaporation, and Radiative Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Water harvesting, radiative cooling, and interfacial solar evaporation are fundamentally governed by coupled heat, mass, and light transport processes. These processes are mediated by pore architecture, including pore size, connectivity, and hierarchical organization.

Descriptors to Dynamics: A Materials and Device Perspective on in‐Materio Physical Reservoir Computing for Neuromorphic Edge Intelligence

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Intrinsic material dynamics are harnessed as computational resources for neuromorphic in‐materio physical reservoir computing. Defects, ionic motion, interfaces, percolation, geometry, and biasing shape transient states that provide fading memory, nonlinearity, and high‐dimensional projection for simple readout. A descriptor‐to‐dynamics framework links

Female Ornamentation in the American Robin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Thesis (Master, Biology) -- Queen's University, 2014-01-30 15:09:57.797Ornamental traits in male birds have been the subject of much research effort, and sexual selection is recognized as the leading explanation for their evolution.

Chic chicks: the evolution of chick ornamentation in rails

open access: yes, 2004
Competition over access to food has led to the evolution of a variety of exaggerated visual and vocal displays in altricial nestling birds. Precocial chicks that are fed by their parents also vary widely in appearance ranging from those with ...

Computation‐Less, Bias‐Free, and Ultra‐Broadband Photodetector for On‐Chip Edge Extraction

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A computation‐less, bias‐free, and ultra‐broadband photodetector directly converts local optical‐intensity gradients into signed photocurrents through a position‐dependent bi‐directional photoresponse. This intrinsic physical sensing mechanism enables single‐pixel edge extraction from the near‐infrared to the long‐wave infrared at room temperature ...

Poly(Alkoxythiophene) Rod‐Coil Block Copolymers for Organic Electrochemical Transistors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We present the first synthesis of poly(3‐alkoxythiophene) rod‐coil block copolymers as a new architecture for OMIECs. Incorporating PEG and PLLA coils can enhance device performance beyond the homopolymer. The figure‐of‐merit depends uniquely on coil length.

A Cu2S/NiOOH Heterojunction Enables Highly Selective Ammonia‐to‐Nitrite Electrooxidation at Industrially Relevant Current Densities

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cu2S/NiOOH heterojunction enables efficient ammonia electrooxidation coupled with hydrogen evolution. Interfacial electronic modulation of Ni sites promotes selective NH3‐to‐NO2− electrooxidation at high current density. In a membrane electrode assembly, Cu2S/NiOOH maintains over 90% Faradaic efficiency of nitrite at 800 mA cm−2, highlighting its ...
