Orphan Care in China

open access: yes, 2009
Orphan care in China was once provided by the central government as a means of social control. The centralized welfare delivery guaranteed some of the poorest orphans to be protected by the government.

CD36‐mediated lipid rewiring in the metabolic adaptation of tumour ecosystems

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Nutrient deprivation drives a lipid‐centric shift in tumour metabolic symbiosis and signalling network. CD36 functions as a bidirectional bridge, transferring fatty acids from stromal donors (adipocytes, CAFs) to the ecosystem tumour‐ and microenvironment‐dependently.

Issues surrounding orphan disease and orphan drug policies in Europe

open access: yes, 2010
p. 343-350An orphan disease is a disease with a very low prevalence. Although there are 5000-7000 orphan diseases, only 50 orphan drugs (i.e. drugs developed to treat orphan diseases) were marketed in the EU by the end of 2008.

Structures of the UBR4 complex reveal a giant arena to capture diverse substrates for ubiquitin chain elongation

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent structures of the UBR4 complex, a giant E4 ubiquitin ligase which recognizes proteins with pre‐existing ubiquitin modifications and marks them for degradation. The UBR4 complex uses a large arena lined with substrate interaction modules to select features on ubiquitinated substrates, such as the presence of N‐degrons or ...

Ion binding sites and intermediate domain closure induced by D‐serine in the GluD1 ligand‐binding domain

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
GluD1 belongs to the ionotropic glutamate receptors and has important functions in the brain and brain diseases. We report the crystal structure of the GluD1 ligand‐binding domain with D‐serine and zinc ions. MD simulations supported promiscuous binding of cations and that chloride ions play a stabilizing role. Pro725 seems to hinder interlobe closure,

A guide to transcriptional cyclin‐dependent kinases in cancer

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Transcriptional cyclin‐dependent‐kinases (tCDKs) facilitate gene expression by promoting RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) progression through discrete phases of the transcription cycle. Aberrant tCDK activity is detectable in different human cancers, thereby contributing to de‐regulated gene expression programs that drive oncogenic phenotypes.
