Genetic inference of orchid colonization of a Costa Rican lava flow

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 55, Issue 6, Page 1195-1202, November 2023., 2023
A 1992 lava flow provides an excellent opportunity to study patterns of colonization and growth of plant populations on a naturally disturbed site. Plants with wind‐dispersed seeds, such as orchids, are often among the earliest colonists after habitat disturbance.

Neutral‐based processes overrule niche‐based processes in shaping tropical montane orchid communities across spatial scales

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 111, Issue 8, Page 1614-1628, August 2023., 2023
High compositional turnover, even across habitats with the highest degree of human intervention, suggests that both forest‐dwelling and open‐habitat species do not easily disperse across habitats. Species dispersal is the major force of orchid community turnover and might be strongly dependent upon macroevolutionary processes and species life‐history ...

Disturbance‐specific behavioral responses of giant otters exposed to ecotourism and extractive activities

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 25, Issue 1, Page 15-26, February 2022., 2022
Behavioral responses of animals to human activity can vary by the type and intensity of disturbance. Giant otters foraged more successfully in protected areas, avoided research vessels in mined and fished lakes and showed tolerance to human presence when previously exposed to ecotourism.

Exploration of Pyrazolo[1,5‐a]pyrimidines as Membrane‐Bound Pyrophosphatase Inhibitors

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 16, Issue 21, Page 3360-3367, November 5, 2021., 2021
Chemical space exploration: Novel low micromolar membrane‐bound pyrophosphatase (mPPase) inhibitors based on an exploratory screening against Thermotoga maritima mPPase followed by early SARs around a pyrazolo[1,5‐a]pyrimidine scaffold. Compound 17 a retained activity against Plasmodium falciparum mPPase in membranes, and inhibited parasite growth ex ...

Automated conservation assessment of the orchid family with deep learning

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 3, Page 897-908, June 2021., 2021
Abstract International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List assessments are essential for prioritizing conservation needs but are resource intensive and therefore available only for a fraction of global species richness. Automated conservation assessments based on digitally available geographic occurrence records can be a rapid alternative,

Linking Endotoxins, African Dust PM10 and Asthma in an Urban and Rural Environment of Puerto Rico

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
African Dust Events (ADE) are a seasonal phenomenon that has been suggested to exacerbate respiratory and proinflammatory diseases in Puerto Rico (PR). Increases in PM10 concentration and the effects of biological endotoxins (ENX) are critical factors to consider during these storms.

On Colour, Category Effects, and Alzheimer’s Disease: A Critical Review of Studies and Further Longitudinal Evidence

open access: yesBehavioural Neurology, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
The role of colour in object recognition is controversial; in this study, a critical review of previous studies, as well as a longitudinal study, was conducted. We examined whether colour benefits the ability of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients and normal controls (NC) when naming items differing in colour diagnosticity: living things (LT) versus ...
