The bandless M bracket protects adhesives that attach orthodontic brackets directly to teeth. Without the M bracket, tested adhesives encountered moisture and integrity of bond was not maintained.

Direct bonding of orthodontic brackets

The direct adhesive bonding of orthodontic brackets to enamel was investigated. For a number of resin systems, all based on a bisphenol-GMA type of resin, commercially available or synthesized, the adhesive bonding to the enamel as well as to the bracket was studied. The maximum average bond strength to enamel was 121 Kg.

Corrosion of orthodontic bracket bases

Attention has recently been focused on the development of black and green stains in association with directly bonded stainless steel brackets. Twelve clinical cases of staining were studied in this investigation. After intraoral photography of the stains, the brackets were removed for examination with the scanning electron microscope.
