Some jurisdictions have many fewer children who struggle with reading than other jurisdictions, as these graphs from our research paper illustrate. Robust research evidence shows that for children with reading difficulties multiple component teaching is more effective than synthetic phonics foremost.

Which Words Are Special? Identification of “Sight” Words in Educational Resources
We examined the overlap in words and properties in the contents of six commonly used word lists designed to support early word reading skills. The resources overlapped very little in their contents, including dramatic variation in terms of the properties of the words included in each.

English as a Heritage Language in Japan: Writing Development From Late Childhood to Adolescence
Bilingual children and adolescents can develop strong writing skills in their heritage language. In a three‐year study of Japanese–English bilinguals in Japan, English writing scores matched or exceeded those of same‐age U.S. peers and improved each year. Writing development was supported by both home literacy practices and weekend schools.

Pre‐service educators used generative AI as a tool to generate, adapt, and customize reading intervention materials. When embedded in a coaching model, GenAI supported more responsive instructional design and helped novice educators strengthen their pedagogical reasoning within a structured literacy framework.
