A new structural method permits the evaluation of bone quality and fracture risk in a case of rapid and progressive osteoporosis of the hand (CRPS type II)

open access: yes, 2013
Aims Even if densitometry is still currently considered to be the gold standard in bone quality assessment, however, the medical community has long been aware that two are the factors that increase bone weakness: bone mineralization loss and micro ...

Stage‐Adaptive Janus Microneedle System for Redox‐Immune Regulation and Mitochondrial Protection in Infected Diabetic Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Infected diabetic wounds are sustained by a vicious cycle of hyperglycemia‐driven bacterial infection, persistent oxidative stress, and excessive inflammation, which collectively disrupt the ordered progression of tissue repair. Here, we engineered a stage‐adaptive Janus microneedle patch (MN‐FeSAC‐PPE) to enable a staged therapeutic process ...

Environmental noise as risk factor for postoperative delirium in an orthopedic sample: an exploratory, correlational study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Postoperative delirium (PD) affects approximately 25 percent of participants over the age of 60 having major surgery. Long term negative effects include persistent delirium, loss of independence, nursing home placement, and mortality.

Nanostructured selenium for anti-cancer orthopedic applications

open access: yes, 2008
Current orthopedic implants have numerous problems that include poor osseointegration, stress shielding and wear debris-associated bone cell death. In particular, certain metallic implants slowly generate corrosion products that limit their performance ...

Ultrasound‐Activatable Piezoelectric Hydrogel Reprograms Mitochondrial Epigenetics for Osteoarthritis Therapy via the mTOR/GATD3A Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An ultrasound‐activatable piezoelectric hydrogel reprograms chondrocyte mitochondrial epigenetics via the mTOR/GATD3A axis, clearing damaged mitochondria and alleviating osteoarthritis progression in both mouse models and human cartilage explants. ABSTRACT The avascular nature of cartilage hinders drug delivery for osteoarthritis (OA) therapy.

THBS1+ Macrophages Exacerbate Modic Changes via SDC4‐Dependent Activation of NLRP3 Inflammasome

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The illustration of THBS1+ macrophages exacerbate MCs via SDC4‐dependent activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. THBS1+ macrophage subpopulation was identified in MCs through single‐cell RNA sequencing. C. acnes and its metabolites activate THBS1 expression in macrophages via the TLR signaling pathway.
