Optimizing rib width to height and rib spacing to deck plate thickness ratios in orthotropic decks

open access: yesCogent Engineering, 2016
Orthotropic decks are composed of deck plate, ribs, and cross-beams and are frequently used in industry to span long distances, due to their light structures and load carrying capacities.

Failure Mechanisms of Short Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials Subjected to Dynamic Loading

open access: yesPolymer Composites, Volume 47, Issue 9, Page 8273-8287, 10 May 2026.
Failure Mechanisms of Short Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials Subjected to Dynamic Loading. ABSTRACT The mechanical behavior of short carbon fiber reinforced polylactic acid (SCF/PLA) composites fabricated by fused deposition modeling (FDM) is crucial for engineering applications, yet their strain‐rate dependence is not fully understood.

Thermo‐Mechanically Recyclable Smart Textiles from Circularly Knitted Liquid Crystal Elastomer Fibers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 37, 7 May 2026.
Reprogrammable multi‐material smart textiles knitted from liquid crystal elastomer fibers undergo 2D and 3D deformation under thermal and photo stimuli. Circularly knitted tubular structures reversibly contract in radial and axial directions, enabling autonomous climbing, liquid release, and micro pumping.

Triple plagiotropic branch in coffee: a new promising mutant?

open access: yesCrop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2017
Coffee tree is a shrub with dimorphic branches. The orthotropic stem grows vertically with two near-horizontal plagiotropic branches, per node, in opposite phyllotaxy. The consecutive nodes of the orthotropic stem are organized in parastichies. We report

A Bottom‐Up Design Framework for Multifunctional Lattice Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 26, 8 May 2026.
This study introduces a generative AI framework for designing multifunctional lattice metamaterials. The method combines 3D Gaussian voxel generation with deep learning, enabling greater design freedom and structural performance. The optimized lattice metamaterials achieve enhanced energy absorption by 40–200% compared to conventional structures and ...

Anchorage System Contribution to Post‐Tensioned Bridge Collapse

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
This paper presents an experimental investigation of a 1960s precast post‐tensioned girder bridge in Trstena, Slovakia, revealing severe corrosion and anchorage degradation that ultimately led to its collapse. The findings highlight critical vulnerabilities in obsolete anchorage systems and emphasize the need for proactive assessment and maintenance of
