Blast Resistance of Steel Orthotropic Bridge Decks

Journal of Bridge Engineering, 2012
AbstractThe main objectives of this study were to: (1) study the response of bridge decks to blast effects resulting from an explosion on the deck; and (2) develop efficient technologies and systems that can be used in design and construction of bridges to enable them to survive blast attacks without collapse.

Fatigue Resilient Design of Bridge Orthotropic Steel Deck

IABSE Congress Reports, 2022

It is difficult to precisely predict the fatigue life of orthotropic decks due to random initial defects and high-cycle loading conditions. Two typical fatigue failures occurr in orthotropic steel decks, which hinder both the capacity and the efficient life of modern steel bridges.

INFLUENCE SURFACES FOR ORTHOTROPIC STEEL BRIDGE DECKS.

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1975
An analytical method to produce influence surfaces for stiffened steel bridge decks is described. It uses dynamic relaxation to solve the finite difference form of the orthotropic small deflexion plate equations and employs A variable orthogonal mesh to ensure maximum economy of computer time and storage.

Wearing Surfaces for Orthotropic Steel Bridge Decks

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 1999
In the state of Alaska, a six-span 884.5-m orthotropic steel bridge crosses the Yukon River at a 6 percent grade. The bridge is on a gravel road, it has a roadway width of 9.2 m, and the orthotropic steel deck is supported by two steel box girders 154.9 cm wide and 414.0 cm deep. The structure is expected to support the oil pipeline, a future gas line,

Monitoring fatigue effects in an orthotropic steel bridge deck

IABSE Reports, 2013

The effect of fatigue is particularly relevant in steel bridges since the influence of traffic load cycles on serviceability limit stress values is very high if compared to relatively low dead weights.

Orthotropic steel decks, directly subjected to traffic loads, are very sensitive to fatigue: in most cases, fatigue defects ...

Analysis of Orthotropic Steel Plate Bridge Decks

Journal of the Structural Division, 1969
A computer-oriented method for the analysis of orthotropic bridge decks is presented. The structure is idealized as a rectangular orthotropic plate which is continuous over simply supported, deformable floor beams. A finite element method is developed for the analysis of the idealized structure.

Fatigue Assessment of Orthotropic Steel Bridge Decks

1990
Fatigue failures have occurred in the steel orthotropic decks of several bridges in Europe, some after little more than a decade in service. This has led not only to expensive inspection and repair procedures but has also highlighted the difficulty of assessing these decks, which lie outside the scope of most design codes.

Concrete overlay of movable steel orthotropic bridge decks

Steel Construction, 2009
AbstractThe deck plate of steel orthotropic bridges is loaded in fatigue by traffic. Increases in both the traffic intensity and the magnitude of the wheel loads have caused premature fatigue cracking of steel bridges in the Netherlands, mostly on very busy motorways.

Numerical Evaluation of Toe-Deck Fatigue in Orthotropic Steel Bridge Deck

Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, 2015
AbstractSome toe-deck crack cases in China have been reported after about 10 years of service in suspension and beam bridge steel orthotropic decks with trough stiffeners. In this paper, a reference stress method used in design practice and a hot-spot stress method provided by the International Institute of Welding are used to investigate toe-deck ...

Orthotropic Steel Deck Bridges Constructed in Cold Regions

Cold Regions Engineering, 2002
This paper will give an overview of imaginative steel deck bridges currently in operation in cold regions throughout the world as an aid in the "type selection" process.. Imaginative bridges from Canada, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine and the USA were selected to demonstrate the complete range of steel bridges such as movable bridges; suspension ...
