Os odontoideum is an independent ossicle of variable size with smooth circumferential cortical margins separated from the foreshortened odontoid peg. The etiology of os odontoideum remains controversial, but there is now emerging consensus on the traumatic etiology of os odontoideum rather than a congenital source. We reviewed the literature of os ...

Hypertrophy of the transverse ligament caused by os odontoideum: a case report [PDF]
Os odontoideum is a small oval or round shaped bone fragment observed as the most common congenital anomaly of theodontoid process. Since it causes a slowly increasing mobility or instability in the atlanto-axial joint, sudden death, tetraplegia, chronic

Abstract Aim An estimated 88% of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients experience various degrees of cervical spine involvement. The excessive movement of the atlantoaxial joint, which connects the occiput to the upper cervical spine, results in atlantoaxial instability (AAI).

Expanding the phenotype of anauxetic dysplasia caused by biallelic NEPRO mutations: A case report
Abstract The cartilage hair hypoplasia and anauxetic dysplasia (CHH‐AD) spectrum encompasses a group of rare skeletal disorders, with anauxetic dysplasia (ANXD) at the most severe end of the spectrum. Biallelic variants in RMRP, POP1, and NEPRO (C3orf17) have previously been associated with the three currently recognized ANXD types.

Dystopic Os odontoideum: A rare cause of atlantoaxial instability
Os odontoideum is a relatively common developmental anomaly of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ), which is usually an incidental finding on spine imaging. But the dystopic variety of os odontoideum is uncommon and can be baleful.

Effect of C1 Single‐door Laminoplasty on Symptomatic Atlas Canal Stenosis
Single‐door laminoplasty combined with atlantoaxial fusion is a safe and simple treatment for symptomatic atlas canal stenosis. Atlas hypoplasia usually developed symptomatic myelopathy due to degenerative factors, mainly atlantoaxial subluxation. Tha is why atlantoaxial fixation and fusion was recommended.

Endoscopic endonasal approach to the craniovertebral junction
Abstract The surgical approach to lesions of the ventral craniovertebral junction (CVJ) has evolved significantly in the last several years with the advent of endoscopic skull base surgery. Differing pathologies of the CVJ can result in irreducible compression of the cervicomedullary region.

Objective. To compare the accuracy, efficiency, and safety of robotic assistance (RA) and conventional fluoroscopy guidance for the placement of C1 lateral mass and C2 pedicle screws in posterior atlantoaxial fusion. Methods. The data of patients who underwent posterior C1–C2 screw fixation (Goel‐Harm’s technique) in our hospital from August 2014 to ...
