Self-oscillations in oscillating heat pipes

High Temperature, 2006
Self-oscillations in oscillating heat pipes are investigated experimentally. A theoretical model of self-oscillations is constructed for the case where the heater is located at the top. Characteristic times of temperature oscillations are obtained, which agree well with experimentally obtained values (of the order of 15 s).

Heat Recovery With Oscillating Heat Pipes

Volume 11: Emerging Technologies, 2013
Waste-heat recovery applied in HVAC air systems is of interest to increase the energy efficiency of residential, commercial and industrial buildings. In this study, the feasibility of using tubular-shaped oscillating heat pipes (OHPs), which are two-phase heat transfer devices with ultra-high thermal conductivity, for heat exchange between counter ...

Heat Transport Capability in an Oscillating Heat Pipe

Journal of Heat Transfer, 2008
A mathematical model predicting the oscillating motion in an oscillating heat pipe is developed. The model considers the vapor bubble as the gas spring for the oscillating motions including effects of operating temperature, nonlinear vapor bulk modulus, and temperature difference between the evaporator and the condenser.

Wavelet Analysis of Oscillating Motions in an Oscillating Heat Pipe

Volume 10: Heat and Mass Transport Processes, Parts A and B, 2011
The heat to be removed from the electronic components or systems can be used to excite the oscillating motion of a train of liquid plugs and bubbles in the oscillating heat pipe (OHP). The oscillating motion in the OHP can significantly enhance heat transfer.

Cooling Performance Improvement of Heat Sink by Oscillating Heat pipe Addition and Design for Environment of Oscillating Heat Pipe Refrigerant

2018 International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Niigata 2018 -ECCE Asia), 2018
Oscillating heat pipe addition to the heat sink was considered for the cooling performance improvement of heat sink. Hydrofluoroolefins (HFO) was chosen as the refrigerant to be encapsulated into the heat pipe, as it is nonflammable and has low global warming potential (GWP) index. HFO is proven to have the equal performance as the existing refrigerant

Nanofluid Oscillating Heat Pipe

2015
For a typical OHP, forced convection plays a key role in the heat transfer from the evaporator to the condenser sections. In other words, most of the heat transferred from the evaporator to the condenser is by sensible heat. Thermal conductivity, viscosity, and heat capacity of the working fluid play more important roles in an OHP than the surface ...

Bubble generation in oscillating heat pipe

Applied Thermal Engineering, 2013
Abstract In the previous models of oscillating heat pipe (OHP), only the evaporation and condensation in the liquid–vapor interfaces were considered as phase changes. Thus, only a simple sinusoidal oscillating motion of liquid slugs and vapor plugs was produced due to the small driving force.

Visualization of Oscillating Heat Pipes

2015
As described in previous chapters, fluid flow and heat transfer in an oscillating heat pipe is very complex. To better understand thermally excited oscillating flow, a number of visualization methods have been used to study fluid flow of liquid plugs and vapor bubbles in OHPs.

Variation in oscillating heat pipe performance

Applied Thermal Engineering, 2019
Abstract Oscillating heat pipes have been shown to be an effective means for thermal management. However, the constant, phase-change-powered oscillation can also produce variations in performance. The goal of this research is to quantify performance variation of oscillating heat pipes through repeated tests with closed-loop flat plate oscillating ...

Oscillating Motion and Heat Transfer Mechanisms of Oscillating Heat Pipes

2015
An oscillating heat pipe (OHP) consists of interconnected capillary channels or tubes filled with a train of liquid plugs and vapor bubbles. An OHP typically has three sections: evaporator, adiabatic section, and condenser. When heat is added onto the evaporator section, liquid becomes vapor resulting in an increase of both vapor volume and pressure ...
