Quantification of flow noise produced by an oscillating hydrofoil

Ocean Engineering, 2019
Abstract After getting inspired from swimming natural species, a lot of research is being carried out in the field of unmanned underwater vehicles. During the last two decades, more emphasis on the associated hydrodynamic mechanisms, structural dynamics, control techniques and, its motion and path planning has been prominently witnessed in the ...

Numerical study on the hydrodynamic performance of a semi-passive oscillating hydrofoil

Ocean Engineering, 2021
Abstract The bio-inspired oscillating hydrofoils are capable of harvesting energy from tidal currents. In this study, the effects of mechanical (spring and damping coefficients) and kinematic (pitching amplitude and oscillation frequency) parameters on the performance of the semi-passive oscillating hydrofoil (NACA 0015) system were numerically ...

Experimental and Numerical Study for Hydrodynamic Characteristics of an Oscillating Hydrofoil

Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2008
The present article reports the experimental Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) investigation and the corresponding numerical simulation results about the water flow over the oscillating hydrofoil and its unsteady dynamic characters. The experimental study focuses on the effect of mean angles of attack.

Fish-Inspired Hydrodynamic Study of Stationary, Undulating, and Oscillating Hydrofoils

open access: yes, 2022
A fish-inspired research, on flow across a hydrofoil that is stationary or mimicking various types of fish-inspired swimming, can reveal efficient flow mechanisms that can lead to a novel design and development of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) or energy extraction devices. The present thesis starts with various flow transitions in the wake of a

Unsteady forces on oscillating hydrofoils [PDF]

open access: yes, 1966
An experimental apparatus is described which has proved to be well suited to the determination of the unsteady lift forces on a hydrofoil oscillating in heave under a free surface. Results are presented for tests covering a wide range of reduced frequency with several foil models in fully wetted, base-ventilated, and supercavitating flow.

Energy extraction and hydrodynamic behavior analysis by an oscillating hydrofoil device

Renewable Energy, 2017
Abstract In this paper, a modified model is proposed for an oscillating foil energy harvesting device, and the corresponding mathematical model is established too. A grid model for foil NACA0015 is built by using dynamic and moving mesh technology of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT.

Horizontally Oscillating Hydrofoil-River-Turbine with Variable Immersion Depth

open access: yes, 2014
Motivated by the unused hydrokinetic potential of smaller European rivers and creeks we develop a horizontally oscillating hydrofoil turbine to exploit those resources. Based on the work of T. Kinsey and Prof. G. Dumas of the Laval University, Canada, on vertically oscillating hydrofoils we adapt and improve the technology to the resources especially ...

Unsteady attached cavitation on an oscillating hydrofoil

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1988
A series of visualizations of non-cavitating and cavitating unsteady flows around an oscillating hydrofoil has been carried out in order to investigate the effect of unsteadiness on attached cavitation. The major conclusion of the present experimental analysis is that the strong interaction that was previously pointed out in the case of steady ...

The Design of Oscillating Hydrofoil Current Generation Device

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015
The oscillating hydrofoil current generation device utilizes a typical movement type, which can transform energy effectively from current. The study shows that the geometrical profile of blades is the fundamental factor to the efficiency. In order to resolve the problem, this paper adapt the BEM(blade elements momentum) theory, which plays an important
