Hydrodynamics of oscillating water column wave energy converters

open access: yes, 2014
This work deals with the numerical studies on hydrodynamics of oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converters and its damping optimization on maximizing wave energy conversion by the OWC device. As a fundamental step, the hydrodynamic problems have been systematically studied by considering the interactions of the wave-structure and of the wave ...

Early evolutionary history of the seed

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The seed is an essential stage in the life history of gymnospermous and angiospermous plants, facilitating both their survival and dispersal. We reappraise knowledge of the evolutionary history of the gymnospermous seed, from its origin in the late Devonian through to the well‐known end‐Permian extinctions – an interval encompassing the ...

Primary wave energy conversions of oscillating water columns

open access: yes, 2013
This paper presents a study on the numerical simulation of the primary wave energy conversion in the oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converters (WECs). The new proposed numerical approach consists of three major components: potential flow analysis for the conventional hydrodynamic parameters, such as added mass, damping coefficients ...

The influence of rivers on seabird foraging ecology

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rivers act as vital arteries to the world's oceans, delivering fresh water and nutrients that sustain marine ecosystems. Globally, river flow increasingly is being altered by climate change and anthropogenic pressures; yet the significance of rivers to predatory marine species, such as seabirds, and the extent to which river‐related changes ...

Effect of cell retention techniques in Komagataella phaffii lab‐scale continuous processes

open access: yesBiotechnology Progress, EarlyView.
Abstract Perfusion technologies play a growing role in the implementation of continuous processes for biotherapeutics production in mammalian‐based manufacturing. However, their application to alternative production hosts is limited. Cell retention systems are of key importance for the efficiency of perfusion bioreactors.

Sodium Tetraazidoaurate(III)—From Na[AuCl4]·2H2O to Na[Au(N3)4] and Beyond One Step at a Time

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Novel sodium chlorido‐/azidoaurate(III) dihydrates Na[AuCl4–x(N3)x]·2H2O (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) provide the first example of a complete series of gradual substitution on tetramer complex anions to be described. Controlled dehydration of Na[Au(N3)4]·2H2O leads to Na[Au(N3)4]·H2O and Na[Au(N3)4], the latter being a highly explosive material.

Design Principles for Next Generation of Small Organic Molecules for Photodynamics Therapy Revealed by Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Molecular design reshapes the landscape of excited‐state relaxation. Nonadiabatic dynamics reveal how electronic structure guides population flow between competing pathways beyond static energetic arguments. ABSTRACT Nitrobenzochalcogenadiazole derivatives are emerging candidates for photodynamic therapy (PDT), yet the precise mechanisms governing ...
