Phase Control for the Oscillating Water Column

1986
In this paper we investigate the use of optimal control techniques for improving the efficiency of the power-conversion system in an oscillating water column device. A mathematical model of the system is developed and an optimal control strategy for power-generation is determined.

Hydrodynamic characteristics of an oscillating water column device

Applied Ocean Research, 1995
We consider a wave energy device consisting of a thin vertical surface-piercing barrier next to a vertical wall in finite depth water. Power is extracted due to a normally incident wave forcing the free surface of the fluid between the barrier and the wall to oscillate, in turn pumping the volume of air above the free surface through a uni-directional ...

Numerical Investigation of Bifurcation in Water Column Oscillator

10th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering, Volume 4, 2002
Behavior of a water column oscillator with a cover gas system was studied experimentally and analytically. One of the free water surfaces was sealed with the cover gas, while the other was open to the atmosphere. The cover gas was supplied with a constant rate, and it was ejected through a valve when the water level reached a certain point.

An Investigation Into the Hydrodynamic Efficiency of an Oscillating Water Column

Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, 2006
An oscillating water column device enables the conversion of wave energy into electrical energy via wave interaction with a semi-submerged chamber coupled with a turbine for power take off. This present work concentrates on the wave interaction with the semi-submerged chamber, whereby a shore based oscillating water column (OWC) is studied ...

Sensor control for an Oscillating Water Column plant

2013 World Congress on Sustainable Technologies (WCST), 2013
The Oscillating Water Column concept consists of two key elements, a turbine located in a pneumatic energy collection chamber and a doubly fed induction generator that converts energy extracted by the turbine into a form that can be returned to the network.

A comparative analysis of Oscillating Water Column turbines

2018 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion (SPEEDAM), 2018
Wave energy seems to be one of the most promising alternatives to the current energy issue. Pursuant to this fact, different devices have been developed so as to harness the energy that waves contain. Amongst all of them, Oscillating Water Column-based systems arise as the preferable technology in the scientific world.

Wave Interaction with Oscillating Bodies and Water Columns

1986
A linear hydrodynamical theory for a system of oscillating bodies and oscillating water columns (OWCs) is described and illustrated by considering a system of one OWC and one body oscillating in a single mode only. A theoretical relationship between added mass and the energy of the near field motion is generalised to include OWCs. Numerical results are

Oscillating water column

2014
The times we live in today are complex where energy is concerned; the primary way in which global power is produced has had a direct effect on the natural climate of the earth. The fuel consumed by centralised power plants is primarily a non-renewable non sustainable resource removed from the earth and consumed within low efficient processes.

Dissipation in oscillating water columns

The Oscillating Water Column (OWC), regarded as the first generation Wave Energy Converter (WEC), is one of the most effective technologies for extraction of ocean wave energy. Most OWCs are designed to resonate at incoming wave frequencies, so that efficiency of the device would be the maximum.

Mechanical Model for Oscillating Water Column with Compressibility

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1989
Certain aspects of modeling of the oscillating water column (OWC) wave‐power device are examined, with particular reference to its behavior at representative off‐resonant frequencies. Although comparison is made with a particular study incorporating the use of compressible flow equations for the air column, this work uses a simple mechanical analog ...
