Spin and Charge Control of Topological End States in Chiral Graphene Nanoribbons on a 2D Ferromagnet

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Chiral graphene nanoribbons on a ferromagnetic gadolinium‐gold surface alloy display tunable spin and charge states at their termini. Atomic work function variations and exchange fields enabe transitions between singlet, doublet, and triplet configurations.

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.

Self‐Cooling Molecular Spin Qudits

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A material made of [GdEr] molecular dimers can encode a qudit and perform as a magnetic refrigerant. Microwave resonant pulses coherently manipulate its 16 spin states, while direct demagnetization measurements cool the material and a device down to temperatures below 1 K.

Tuning Amorphous‐Crystalline Catalytic Interfaces by Mechanochemistry: Cu‐Based Metallic Glasses Coupled with Ceria for CO Oxidation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ball‐milling Cu‐based metallic glasses with ceria creates a unique nanostructure where metallic glass particles are wrapped by CeO2 nanoparticles. The intimate integration triggers copper state reorganization during reaction and aging, boosting CO oxidation and COPrOx activity.

Statistical modelling and variability of the subtropical front, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Ocean fronts are narrow zones of intense dynamic activity that play an important role in global ocean-atmosphere interactions. Of particular significance is the circumglobal frontal system of the Southern Ocean where intermediate water masses are formed,

A Functional 2D Carbon Allotrope Combining Nanoporous Graphene and Biphenylene Segments

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis of a novel nanoporous graphene (NPG) is reported with biphenylene segments via thermal fusion of 12‐armchair porous graphene nanoribbons grown on gold surfaces. Characterization using STM, AFM, and DFT reveals low‐defect semiconducting behaviour and tunable band gaps.

Synchronization and chaos control in a periodically-forced, quasi-geostrophic, two-layer model of baroclinic instability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Cyclic forcing on many timescales is believed to have a significant effect on various quasi-periodic, geophysical phenomena such as El Niño, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, and glacial cycles.

Mode-locked laser oscillation using self-pumped phase-conjugate reflection

open access: yes, 1981
Efficient phase conjugation of 40-psec Nd: YAG laser pulses in Eastman Kodak mode-locking dyes A 9740 and A 9860 has been obtained. Variation of the phase-conjugate reflectivity with pump intensity is quadratic, without saturation effects, and variation ...
