PMU application for locating the source of forced oscillations in smart grids

2018 IEEE Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI), 2018
Oscillations can cause major stability concern in power systems. It is very important to analyze and locate oscillations quickly so that prompt remedial reactions can be taken to increase the system stability. This paper presents a novel multi-delay self-coherence method to locate source of forced oscillations using measurement data.

Application of Phasor Measurement Unit on Locating Disturbance Source for Low-Frequency Oscillation

IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, 2010
A smart power grid is an integration of the advanced measurement, communication, computer, and control techniques. Among all the state-of-the-art technologies in building a smart power grid, the phasor measurement unit (PMU) is an important and promising one. Nowadays in China, most ultrahigh- and high-voltage buses are all equipped with PMUs.

Disturbance source location of forced power oscillation in regional power grid

2011 IEEE Power Engineering and Automation Conference, 2011
It is well known that continuous small power disturbances can excite the forced power oscillation in power systems, and removal of disturbance source is the best way to rapidly attenuate the oscillation. In order to find the location of disturbance source, energy conversion characteristics of the forced power oscillation in a linear system during ...

Oscillation source location using wavelet transforms and generalized linear models

IEEE PES T&D 2010, 2010
Recent developments in measurement and processing techniques have been used to monitor the stability of oscillations directly. Combined with fast, real-time data processing, this technology allows real-time monitoring of the margin of safety maintained against potential instability.

An energy-based methodology for locating the source of forced oscillations in power systems

2012 IEEE International Conference on Power System Technology (POWERCON), 2012
Recently, several power grids of China came across low frequency oscillations which are difficult to explain by the traditional negative damping mechanism. Some researchers suggest that those oscillations be caused by external periodic disturbances according to the forced oscillation mechanism.
