3D investigation and modeling of the geometric effects on porosity in packed beds

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract In porous beds, physical boundaries restrict particle arrangement, leading to inhomogeneous porosity. This paper reports on the porosity profiles that are the result of geometric effects on monodisperse packed beds in cylindrical and cubic arrangements. Special focus is given to the influence of edges and corners in cubic geometries.

Measurement of Neutrino Oscillation with KamLAND: Evidence of Spectral Distortion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We present results of a study of neutrino oscillation based on a 766 ton-year exposure of KamLAND to reactor anti-neutrinos. We observe 258 \nuebar\ candidate events with energies above 3.4 MeV compared to 365.2 events expected in the absence of neutrino

Experimental validation of the RESPONSE framework against cyberattacks on cyber‐physical process systems

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This work experimentally validates the RESPONSE (Resilient Process cONtrol SystEm) framework as a solution for maintaining safe, continuous operation of cyber‐physical process systems under cyberattacks. RESPONSE implements a dual‐loop architecture that runs a networked online controller in parallel with a hard‐isolated offline controller ...

What to Make and How to Make It: Combining Machine Learning and Statistical Learning to Design New Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Combining machine learning and probabilistic statistical learning is a powerful way to discover and design new materials. A variety of machine learning approaches can be used to identify promising candidates for target applications, and causal inference can help identify potential ways to make them a reality.

Enhancement of CO2 removal from flue gas in an oscillatory baffled column using potassium carbonate solution

open access: yesCleaner Engineering and Technology
One of the efficient methods for reducing CO2 emissions from flue gas streams in oil refineries and power plants is the CO2absorption process using alkali solution. Potassium carbonate (K2CO3) solution, as CO2 absorbent, was used in the present study due
