CLADOGENESIS AND LOSS OF THE MARINE LIFE-HISTORY PHASE IN FRESHWATER GALAXIID FISHES (OSMERIFORMES: GALAXIIDAE) [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution, 2007
Switches from migratory (diadromous) to nonmigratory (freshwater) life histories are known to have occurred repeatedly in some aquatic taxa. However, the significance of the loss of diadromy as an initiator for speciation remains poorly understood. The rivers of New Zealand's South Island house a species flock of recently derived nonmigratory galaxiid ...

Parasites of the Red Jollytail, Brachygalaxias bullocki (Osmeriformes: Galaxiidae), from the Maullín River, Patagonia, Chile

open access: yesComparative Parasitology, 2008
Brachygalaxias bullocki (Regan, 1908) is a fish species endemic to Chile, and its distribution is restricted from Concepcion to ChiloeIsland. A survey conducted during January 2007, involving 26 fish from the Maullo´n River in Southern Chile, shows that infracommunities richness ranged from 0 to 5 with a mean species richness of 2.3 (SD ¼ 1.3).

First steps towards mass rearing of European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus, L.) using conventional hatchery equipment

open access: yesAquatic Living Resources, 2023
Anadromous European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) is a keystone species in lake and river ecosystems. In the past and present, stock declines in several of its habitats have been reported. The reasons for this are unclear.

(Sundasalangidae) is a progenetic clupeiform, not a closely‐related group of salangids (Osmeriformes): mitogenomic evidence

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, 2005
Partitioned Bayesian analysis of whole mitochondrial genome sequences from 30 basal teleosts confidently placed Sundasalanx(Sundasalangidae) within the Clupeiformes, not Osmeriformes as originally thought. This study represents the first demonstration of the phylogenetic position of Sundasalanx on a phylogenetic tree.

Assessment of listing and categorisation of animal diseases within the framework of the Animal Health Law (Regulation (EU) 2016/429): Bacterial kidney disease (BKD)

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 21, Issue 10, October 2023., 2023
Abstract Bacterial kidney disease (BKD) was assessed according to the criteria of the Animal Health Law (AHL), in particular the criteria of Article 7 on disease profile and impacts, Article 5 on its eligibility to be listed, Annex IV for its categorisation according to disease prevention and control rules as laid out in Article 9 and Article 8 for ...

Climate Change Risks to Freshwater Subsistence Fisheries in Arctic Alaska: Insights and Uncertainty from Broad Whitefish Coregonus nasus

open access: yesFisheries, Volume 48, Issue 7, Page 295-306, July 2023., 2023
Arctic freshwater ecosystems and fish populations are largely shaped by seasonal and long‐term watershed hydrology. In this paper, we hypothesize how changing air temperature and precipitation will alter freeze and thaw processes, hydrology, and instream habitat to assess potential indirect effects, such as the change to the foraging and behavioral ...

A preliminary study on the age and growth of the argentine, Argentina sphyraena (Actinopterygii: Osmeriformes: Argentinidae) from the eastern Adriatic Sea [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2017
Background. Age determination is a basic step in understanding fish biology and dynamics of fish populations. The only available data on the age and growth of argentine, Argentina sphyraena Linnaeus, 1758, a non-commercially exploited species of the ...

Food composition and zooplankton selection by smelts, Osmerus eperlanus L., in Lake Tyrifjorden, Norway

open access: yesFauna Norvegica, 1983
Stomach analyses were carried out on 80 - 160 mm long smelts sampled monthly from May 1976 to September 1977. The amount of food was lower from February to April than during the rest of the year.
