Osmopriming of seeds can increase seed vigour, allowing faster germination and field emergence, especially under adverse field conditions. The restricted imbibition during priming treatments reactivates metabolism although germination will be prevented.

AbstractThe conditions of osmopriming of maize seeds have been established. At an osmotic potential of–1.7 MPa, seed germination is inhibited and seeds osmoprimed for up to 3 weeks show an improved germinability when the osmotic agent is removed. This improvement also applies to seeds that lost vigour because of improper storage conditions.

AbstractA partial amino acid sequence of a vigour-related protein, V-1, from cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L.) seeds was obtained, after isolation by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and gas-phase micro-sequencing. The sequence was found to have high homology to soybean seed maturation proteins.
