Avian influenza overview September–December 2024

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract Between 21 September and 6 December 2024, 657 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) and A(H5N5) virus detections were reported in domestic (341) and wild (316) birds across 27 countries in Europe. Many HPAI outbreaks in domestic birds were clustered in areas with high poultry density and characterised by secondary farm‐to‐farm ...

Coastal connectivity of marine predators over the Patagonian Shelf during the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2024, Issue 11, November 2024.
Animal movement and population connectivity are key areas of uncertainty in efforts to understand and predict the spread of infectious disease. The emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in South America poses a significant threat to globally significant populations of colonial breeding marine predators in the South Atlantic.

Inhalant anesthesia for minimally invasive procedures in free‐ranging Guadalupe fur seals (Arctocephalus philippii townsendi)

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 40, Issue 3, July 2024.
Abstract Free‐ranging otariids are routinely captured for data and sample collection. To achieve this, anesthesia may be used to facilitate handling, decrease stress, and improve human and animal safety. Injectable anesthetics are widely used for such endeavors; however, certain disadvantages to this approach warrant further exploration of alternative ...

Combining potential and realized distribution modeling of telemetry data for a bycatch risk assessment

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2024.
We applied telemetry data of a mobile and widespread species in a combined distribution modeling framework (distribution was modeled at the population‐level and individual‐level). In our northern Chile study system, the combined predictions of South American sea lions revealed unique patterns of habitat use across scales.
