Heavy metal distribution in southern Sea Lions (Otaria flavescens) from Argentina

Sea Lions of the World, 2006
Marine mammals accumulate heavy metals in their tissues and organs, and diet is the major intake of contaminants in these top predators. In the present study, heavy metal analyses were performed in muscle, liver, and kidney of three adults and one juvenile southern sea lion of both sexes (1.2-2.3 m) found dead on beaches of northern Argentina.

Relaxed Open Mouth reciprocity favours playful contacts in South American sea lions ( Otaria flavescens )

Behavioural Processes, 2017
Fine-tuning communication is well documented in mammalian social play which relies on a large variety of specific and non-specific signals. Facial expressions are one of the most frequent patterns in play communication. The reciprocity of facial signals expressed by the players provides information on their reciprocal attentional state and on the ...

Sexual harassment and female gregariousness in the South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens

Naturwissenschaften, 2008
Most colonial pinnipeds form extreme clusters of breeding females that cannot be entirely explained by the distribution of sites for reproduction. Avoidance of male harassment has been postulated as an important determinant of reproductive aggregation in this group of mammals.

Multimetastatic Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a South American Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens; Shaw, 1800)

Aquatic Mammals, 2021
An 18-year-old captive born and neutered male South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens, Shaw 1800) presented with intermittent symptoms of disease of the digestive tract (anorexia, reduced activity, vomit, and diarrhea). Over the course of 12 days, severe leukocytosis, signs of liver damage, and anemia developed accompanied by rapid weight loss and ...

Cardiorespiratory patterns of male South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) resting on land

Journal of Comparative Physiology B
The goal of this study was to characterize the cardiorespiratory patterns of male South American sea lions (SASLs, Otaria flavescens) resting on land. We recorded respiratory and heart rate (n = 360 individuals studied) by observing the nostrils, chest movements and the impact of the heart on the thoracic wall.

SPECTRAL SENSITIVITY IN TWO SPECIES OF PINNIPEDS (PHOCA VITULINA AND OTARIA FLAVESCENS)

Marine Mammal Science, 2006
AbstractSpectral sensitivity was measured in air in the light adapted state in two harbor seals and a South American sea lion using a behavioral training technique. Increment thresholds were determined in a spectral range from 390 nm to 670 nm in a simultaneous two‐choice discrimination task.

Fingerprint of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in two populations of southern sea lions (Otaria flavescens)

Chemosphere, 1997
The fingerprint of 14 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated in biopsy, fur, blood, liver and faeces of live and dead specimens of two Argentinian population of southern sea lion (Otaria flavescens). One colony lives in Mar del Plata harbour which is particularly polluted with petroleum, the second (control) colony lives at Punta ...
