Optimized Design and Propulsion Performance of the Robotic Sea Lion Foreflipper

open access: yesProceedings
Otariidae are the only marine mammals that use their foreflippers for propulsion, and the combination of hydrofoil and paddle propulsion makes them excellent hunters and swimmers. Therefore, it is of great scientific significance and engineering value to

Stranded Marine Mammals on the South-Central Coast of Peru during El Niño 1997-98

open access: yesRevista Peruana de Biología
During the 1997-98 El Niño event, an assessment of marine mammal strandings was conducted from August 1997 to April 1998 between 15°22' and 15°27' S. This assessment encompassed 30.4 km of coastline, distributed in seven sectors located along the borders

Adaptations to a semiaquatic lifestyle in the external ear of southern pinnipeds (Otariidae and Phocidae, Carnivora): Morphological evidences.

open access: yesZoology, 2019
Pinnipeds are semiaquatic carnivorans that spend most of their lives in water and use coastal terrestrial, or ice pack, environments to breed, molt and rest. Certain characteristics of the ear have been linked to ecological aspects.

Patterns of spinal motion, kinematic spaces and the land‐to‐sea transition in carnivorans

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Using 3D reconstructions, we quantify intervertebral joint mobility to investigate how cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral regions evolved distinct kinematic roles in pinnipeds. The findings reveal lineage‐specific adaptations for swimming and highlight the functional significance of vertebral joint flexibility in ecological transitions.

Phylogeographic and Demographic Analysis of the Asian Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus) Based on Mitochondrial DNA. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The Asian black bear Ursus thibetanus is widely distributed in Asia and is adapted to broad-leaved deciduous forests, playing an important ecological role in the natural environment. Several subspecies of U. thibetanus have been recognized, one of which,

Records of Southern Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens) (Mammalia: Carnivora: Otariidae) and Total Mercury (THg) Levels in Muscle Tissue of a Specimen on the East Coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil

open access: yesOALib, 2019
This study aims to present records of southern sea lions (Otaria flavescens) on the coast of Arraial do Cabo, located on the east coast of Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil, and information on the levels of total mercury (THg) found in muscle ...

Comparative Trends of Sociality Among Terrestrial Carnivores: A Multivariate Analysis 陆生食肉动物社会性的比较趋势:一项多变量分析

open access: yesWildlife Letters, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 10-22, March 2026.
In this study we analyze the role of phylogeny, environment, and community structure on sociality. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) we aim to quantify the direct and indirect impacts of variables on behaviors including social grouping, reproduction, and space use among Carnivora species.

Effect of angle on flow-induced vibrations of pinniped vibrissae. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Two types of vibrissal surface structures, undulated and smooth, exist among pinnipeds. Most Phocidae have vibrissae with undulated surfaces, while Otariidae, Odobenidae, and a few phocid species possess vibrissae with smooth surfaces.

Improvement in survivorship: The key for population recovery? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In northern Patagonia, commercial harvesting of South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens, from 1920 to 1960, decimated its population abundance. Population recovery was not immediate after hunting ceased in 1962.
