Comparison between clinical evaluations and laboratory findings and the impact of biofilm on antimicrobial susceptibility in vitro in canine otitis externa

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 34, Issue 6, Page 586-596, December 2023., 2023
Background – In clinical practice, the diagnosis of otitis externa (OE) normally is based on otoscopic examination and cytological findings, followed by empirical treatment with topic drugs. Biofilm‐producing bacteria are frequently present in OE, even if its presence is often underdiagnosed. Hypothesis/Objectives – The primary aim of this study was to

The Zircon Story of the Niger River: Time‐Structure Maps of the West African Craton and Discontinuous Propagation of Provenance Signals Across a Disconnected Sediment‐Routing System

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 128, Issue 11, November 2023., 2023
Abstract The Niger River drains a large part of the West African Craton, where rocks ranging in age from Paleoarchean to recent offer an unexcelled opportunity to map the diverse time structures of sediment sources and provide essential information for provenance diagnoses.

Effect of an ear cleaner instillation containing lipacids in a model of re‐acidification of the external auditory canal in dogs

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 33, Issue 5, Page 402-406, October 2022., 2022
Abstract Background In humans, the acidic pH of the ear canal plays a protective role against infection and a change towards alkalinity of the external auditory canal (EAC) is a local factor in the progression of acute to chronic otitis externa (OE).

Brachycephaly in French bulldogs and pugs is associated with narrow ear canals

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 33, Issue 3, Page 214-e60, June 2022., 2022
Background Brachycephalic dog breeds have multiple skull malformations which may lead to anatomical changes in the external auditory canal. It is our frequent observation that in the otoscopic examination of the external ear in these breeds we are unable to visualise the tympanic membrane as a consequence of extreme narrowing of the proximal ear canal.

Background Antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (SP) and the prevalence of meticillin‐resistant SP (MRSP) is increasing in dogs worldwide. Objectives To evaluate the influence of hospital size on antimicrobial resistance of SP and whether restricted use of antimicrobials based on antibiograms could reduce the identification of ...

Clinical Techniques: When and how to do a myringotomy – a practical guide

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 32, Issue 3, Page 302-e82, June 2021., 2021
A myringotomy is a surgical incision made in the tympanic membrane (TM). This gives access to the middle ear for sampling, flushing and instilling topical therapy. It should be considered whenever the TM is intact and there is clinical evidence of otitis media, abnormal TMs and/or abnormal diagnostic imaging. Samples should be collected for cytological
