Glass‐blowing, brass‐playing, and other laryngocele etiologies: Fact or fiction? A systematic literature review

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Laryngocele is a rare condition, which can be congenital or acquired, characterized by an abnormal dilatation of the laryngeal ventricle filled with air. A correlation between laryngocele formation and increased intralaryngeal pressure has been postulated, as much as a frequent coexistence with laryngeal carcinoma.

Diagnostic Accuracy of an Orofacial Scale for the Detection of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

open access: yesJournal of Oral Rehabilitation, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are known to have orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) compared to healthy individuals. Consequently, treatment with oropharyngeal exercises has shown promise in some OSA cases. However, this requires an adequate orofacial myofunctional evaluation.

Mixture of Input-Output Hidden Markov Models for Heterogeneous Disease Progression Modeling [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
A particular challenge for disease progression modeling is the heterogeneity of a disease and its manifestations in the patients. Existing approaches often assume the presence of a single disease progression characteristics which is unlikely for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

The Effect of Disease-induced Mortality on Structural Network Properties [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 10, e0136704 (2015), 2015
As the understanding of the importance of social contact networks in the spread of infectious diseases has increased, so has the interest in understanding the feedback process of the disease altering the social network. While many studies have explored the influence of individual epidemiological parameters and/or underlying network topologies on the ...

Perioperative pain management based on enhanced recovery after surgery in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy: A prospective, randomized controlled trial

open access: yesLaryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology, 2022
Background Pain management, as a key component of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), can effectively relieve perioperative pain and anxiety. However, there are few studies on the application of pain management based on ERAS in pediatric surgery ...

Transforming Growth Factor‐β‐Activated Protein 1 (TAK1) Regulates Necroptosis in Age‐Related Hearing Loss

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 24, Issue 6, June 2025.
TAK1‐mediated necroptotic pathways play an important role in the pathogenesis of ARHL. ABSTRACT Inflammation plays an important role in age‐related hearing loss (ARHL). Transforming growth factor‐β‐activated protein 1 (TAK1), a key factor upstream of inflammatory pathways, mediates various cell death pathways, potentially influencing the survival and ...

Delayed Postoperative Radiotherapy in Head & Neck Cancers—A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, Volume 135, Issue 5, Page 1563-1570, May 2025.
This study evaluates the impact of delayed postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) on overall survival in patients with head and neck cancers. The findings indicate that initiating PORT within 42 days significantly reduces mortality, emphasizing the importance of timely treatment.

Phase diagram of epidemic spreading - unimodal vs. bimodal probability distributions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The disease spreading on complex networks is studied in SIR model. Simulations on empirical complex networks reveal two specific regimes of disease spreading: local containment and epidemic outbreak. The variables measuring the extent of disease spreading are in general characterized by a bimodal probability distribution.

Comparative analyses of short‐ and long‐term outcomes between endoscopic submucosal dissection and endoscopic laryngo‐pharyngeal surgery for superficial pharyngeal carcinomas

open access: yesDEN Open, Volume 5, Issue 1, April 2025.
Abstract Objectives Endoscopic treatment of superficial pharyngeal carcinomas includes endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD; usually performed by endoscopists), and endoscopic laryngo‐pharyngeal surgery (ELPS; primarily performed by otolaryngologists).

Improvement in gait pattern after total knee arthroplasty for knee osteoarthritis

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics, Volume 12, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Purpose Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) leads to gait and balance deficiency, and to hinder activities of daily living (ADLs); all these factors may increase the risk of falls. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) improves gait and balance; however, the effect of the contralateral knee's condition on this improvement has not been examined.
