Time, place, person: Field epidemiology as a political practice
Abstract Five years after the end of the Ebola epidemic, a district in Sierra Leone received a measles alert. This article tells the story of the epidemic that followed and the response that was mounted in the context of the new global epidemic preparedness and biosecurity paradigms that govern the management of health emergencies.

James Lyman Merrick's Aborted “Mission to the Mohammedans of Persia”
Abstract James Lyman Merrick (1803‐1866) served as a missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) in Persia between 1835 and 1845. He was America's first missionary to the Muslim world. Based on his field research on the Persians’ religious beliefs, he correctly predicted that the conversion of Persia's Muslims into ...

Addition of Asaia species to the rearing water of mosquito larvae can affect the structure of the larval microbiome, although these bacteria do not persist to the pupal stage. Asaia inoculation can increase the adult size of males of two mosquito species. The impact of Asaia inoculation on development rate and female size depended on bacterial and host

First comprehensive survey of overwintering mosquitoes in Estonia, documenting 5286 female mosquitoes collected from 18 subterranean overwintering sites. The Culex pipiens/Culex torrentium group dominated overwintering assemblages, representing 96.6% of all analysed specimens. Molecular analyses revealed a higher proportion of Cx.

The effect of temperature on oviposition activity is not uniform across time. Heat stress exerts delayed population‐level impacts. Moderate temperatures favour population development while both low and high temperatures impose constraints. The delayed negative effect of warm temperatures, peaking at 2–3 weeks rather than immediately.

ABSTRACT How do the strategies that governments employ when they encounter crisis‐induced turbulence affect the robustness of the political regime in which they operate? Comparative studies of the connection between government strategies and political regime robustness under different cultural and institutional conditions are few and far between.

Deciphering Role of Endophytes in Plant Defences and Biotic Stress Resilience Across Families
ABSTRACT Plant families generate distinct repertoires of specialised metabolites that govern their biotic interactions. Endophytes strengthen host plant defence mechanisms and tolerance to biotic challenges by upregulating metabolite biosynthesis, modifying precursor compounds into more potent forms, or by directly synthesising analogous defence ...

ABSTRACT Plants are dynamic chemical factories that produce diverse specialised metabolites essential for growth, defence, and environmental adaptation. Metabolomes, shaped by genetic architecture, enable plants to respond to abiotic and biotic pressures, including temperature fluctuations.

233 nm far‐UV‐C radiation for biofilm inactivation
Based on tests to assess biofilm formation potential (crystal violet staining, color of colonies grown on Congo red agar and calcofluor agar), three bacterial genera/species/strains (Staphylococcus (S.) epidermidis, S. aureus, Pseudomonas (P.) aeruginosa) were selected for analysis of their biofilm matrix composition.
