Pre‐industrial land‐use limits contemporary shrub encroachment in the French Alps

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Shrub encroachment has become a global phenomenon in recent decades. While global warming in the Arctic is often cited as the primary cause, human‐managed mountain regions have experienced intense historical land‐use that may also play a considerable role.

Mesozoic–Cenozoic Thermochronology of the Tarim–Southern Tianshan System, NW China

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Tectonothermal history of the Tarim–Southern Tianshan system compared with the major tectonic events at far‐field plate margins. ABSTRACT The Tarim Basin, an oil‐bearing basin in northwest China, is tectonically and sedimentologically linked to the Southern Tianshan Orogenic Belt.

An integrated workflow for parametrization of fracture network geometry in digital outcrop models [PDF]

open access: yesSolid Earth
Mesoscale fractures, with lengths between meters and tens of meters, cannot be effectively characterized in the subsurface, due to limitations of borehole and geophysical datasets.

Molecular Palaeontology Prospects From Exceptionally Preserved Eocene Brackish‐Water Bivalve Batissa sitakaraensis (Venerida: Corbiculidae) From Hokkaido, Japan

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
This study reports the exceptional preservation of the Eocene freshwater bivalve Batissa sitakaraensis from Hokkaido, Japan. Multimodal analyses reveal that both the aragonitic shell mineralogy and the delicate organic periostracum retain their original structural and chemical characteristics after millions of years.

Worldwide distribution of continental rock lithology: Implications for the atmospheric/soil CO2 uptake by continental weathering and alkalinity river transport to the oceans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The silicate rock weathering followed by the formation of carbonate rocks in the ocean, transfers CO2 from the atmosphere to the lithosphere. This CO2 uptake plays a major role in the regulation of atmospheric CO2 concentrations at the geologic ...

Seismic Sequence Stratigraphy Applied to Reservoir Recognition and Evolution on Marine Carbonatic Ramp—Macaé Group (Albian to Cenomanian) of Campos Basin

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
A classic oil producing interval of the Campos Basin—Macaé Group is revisited through seismic stratigraphic analysis, providing a stratigraphic framework, characteristic depositional and relative time positioning for several complex structural settings.

Large-scale bedrock outcrop mapping on the NE Atlantic Irish continental margin

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
The Irish continental margin (ICM) encompasses many complex sedimentary basins and diverse geomorphological features displaying bedrock outcrops where a large variety of habitats can be observed. This large area of seabed extends over >400,000 km2 and
