Another look at the core density deficit of Earth’s outer core

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 2002
Abstract A constraint adopted in several geochemical studies of core composition is that the core density deficit (cdd) is 10%, with the implication that this number is based on robust geophysical evidence. The cdd is the perceived difference between the density of pure iron at core conditions and the seismically-determined density of the outer core.

Seismic Waves within Earth's Outer Core: Multiple Reflection

Science, 1968
Seismic waves reflected as many as four times within Earth's outer core are routinely recorded from large earthquakes. Observations of these waves are confined to rays near grazing incidence on the core-mantle boundary, in agreement with theoretical expectation. Minor adjustments to outer-core velocities may be necessary to account for certain of these

Composition and temperature of the outer core

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1973
A pressure-density model of the outer core is assumed, and the corresponding observed seismic velocity distribution is compared to that calculated from shock-wave theory, for assumed values of Hugoniot parameters and Grueneisen's ratio. A wide range of Hugoniot parameter values is compatible with the seismic properties of the outer core, if reasonable ...

Outer core compositional layering and constraints on core liquid transport properties

Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2014
A variety of studies of the Earth's outer core report wave speeds near the top of the core slightly lower than reference models for core properties. One interpretation of the slower wavespeed profile is that it could represent a change in the core's light element concentration with depth in the core.

Resistive wave breaking in the Earth's outer core

Geophysical & Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics, 2005
The equations for an electrically conducting fluid in cylindrical coordinates are linearized assuming that the inertial terms in the momentum equation can be ignored (small Rossby number), and that the ratio of the Elsasser number and magnetic Reynolds number is one.

Formation of the Cores of the Outer Planets

Space Science Reviews, 2005
The formation of the giant planets seems to be best explained by accretion of planetesimals to form massive cores, which in the case of Jupiter and Saturn were able to capture nebular gas. However, the timescale for accretion of such cores has been a problem.
