Application of outgoing longwave radiation data for earthquake research

2010 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Intelligent Systems, 2010
Satellite thermal infrared (TIR) data have revealed anomalies prior to major earthquakes. The paper presents the potential relationship between outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) anomalies and earthquakes. The method used in this work is to subtract long-lived background from initial data and have been applied to detect seismic anomalies successfully ...

The Earth's outgoing longwave radiation spectrum as seen by REFIR

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
ABSTRACT Between 25-35% of the EarthÂ’s outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) lies in the far-infrared (FIR) spectral region from 0-500cm -1 where the emission is primarily due to water vapour located in the upper and mid troposphere. The local maximum in the absorption spectru m of ice means that high, cold cirrus clouds have a large effect on intensity of

Diurnal Variation of Outgoing Longwave Radiation in the Tropics

Journal of Climate and Applied Meteorology, 1986
The diurnal harmonic in longwave emission in the tropical belt (30 deg N-30 deg S) is estimated from nine years of NOAA polar-orbiting satellite data. The results are compared successfully with Nimbus-7 ERB scanner data and with GOES-West geosynchronous satellite data.

Study on outgoing longwave radiation variations associated with strong earthquake

SPIE Proceedings, 2009
In this paper, OLR (Outgoing Longwave Radiation) data monthly vorticity variations related to three earthquakes in Sichuan-Yunnan area have been analyzed so as to seek short-term (within three months) seismic anomalies. In order to obtain a reference field without any seismic information, OLR data of three years (2004, 2005, and 2006) without ...

Retrieval of outgoing longwave radiation from COMS narrowband infrared imagery

Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, 2015
Hourly outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) from the geostationary satellite Communication Oceanography Meteorological Satellite (COMS) has been retrieved since June 2010. The COMS OLR retrieval algorithms are based on regression analyses of radiative transfer simulations for spectral functions of COMS infrared channels.

An improvement in cumulus parameterization by invoking outgoing longwave radiation

Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, 1992
The Kuo-type cumulus parameterization and rainfall rate scheme is extended by including the outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), the local time rate of change of OLR, and the horizontal Laplacian of OLR to include the additional source of mesoscale moisture supply. The extended scheme remains simple and efficient.

An Earth Outgoing Longwave Radiation Climate Model. Part I: Clear Sky Radiation

Journal of Climate and Applied Meteorology, 1987
An earth outgoing longwave radiation (OLWR) climate model is presented. The model uses the upward radiative transfer parameterization of Thompson and Warren (1982) for radiation calculations, and a climatologic dataset from Crutcher and Meserve (1970) and Taljaard et al.

Relationships between outgoing longwave radiation and diabatic heating in reanalyses

Climate Dynamics, 2016
This study investigates relationships between daily variability in National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), as a proxy for deep convection, and the global diabatic heat budget derived from reanalysis data sets.

Annual Variation of the Diurnal Cycle of Outgoing Longwave Radiation

Monthly Weather Review, 1988
Abstract The annual variation of the diurnal cycle of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) is examined. Our results are based on the climatological amplitude and phase of the first diurnal harmonic for each month. The diurnal harmonic was extracted from a composite daily cycle from several polar orbiting satellites that flew in different years with ten ...

Validation of Outgoing Longwave Radiation in a General Circulation Model

Monthly Weather Review, 1988
Abstract Outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) simulated by the GLAS general circulation model is compared with that derived from measurements made by polar orbiting satellites. The comparison is made for spatial and seasonal variations by expanding the spatial into surface spherical harmonics.
