Evaluation of ACCMIP outgoing longwave radiation from tropospheric ozone using TES satellite observations [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2013
We use simultaneous observations of tropospheric ozone and outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) sensitivity to tropospheric ozone from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) to evaluate model tropospheric ozone and its effect on OLR simulated by a ...

Evolution and Trend of the Outgoing Longwave Radiation Spectrum

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2009
AbstractThe variability and change occurring in the outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) spectrum are investigated by using simulations performed with a Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory coupled atmosphere–ocean–land general circulation model. First, the variability in unforced climate (natural variability) is simulated.

Spatial Variability of Albedo and Net Radiation at Local Scale Using UAV Equipped with Radiation Sensors

open access: yesDrones, 2023
Energy balance closure is an important feature in studies of ecosystem exchanges of energy and greenhouse gases using the eddy covariance method. Previous analyses show that this is still a problem with imbalances in the order of 0.6–0.7 to full closure (

Trends in spectrally resolved outgoing longwave radiation from 10 years of satellite measurements

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science, 2021
In recent years, the interest has grown in satellite-derived hyperspectral radiance measurements for assessing the individual impact of climate drivers and their cascade of feedbacks on the outgoing longwave radiation (OLR).

Interannual variability of outgoing longwave radiation as observed by AIRS and CERES [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2012
The paper examines spatial anomaly time series of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and Clear Sky OLR (OLRCLR) as determined using observations from CERES Terra and AIRS over the time period September 2002 through June 2011. We find excellent agreement of the two OLR data sets in almost every detail down to the 1° × 1° spatial grid point level.

Outgoing longwave radiation and cloud radiative forcing of the Tibetan Plateau [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2000
In order to study the energy balance and the cloud radiative forcing (CRF) of the Tibetan Plateau in detail, 2 years of GMS5 satellite data are employed to analyze the monthly mean outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and CRF. It should be noted that the temporal resolution of GMS5 data is 1 hour, so the data can be used to study the diurnal variations of

Outgoing Longwave Radiation due to Directly Transmitted Surface Emission [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2012
Abstract A frequently used diagram summarizing the annual- and global-mean energy budget of the earth and atmosphere indicates that the irradiance reaching the top of the atmosphere from the surface, through the midinfrared atmospheric window, is 40 W m−2; this can be compared to the total outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) of about 235 W

A mosaic of microclimates: biodiversity outcomes and wildlife habitat potential in large‐scale solar facilities

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The rapid global expansion of photovoltaic (PV) solar facilities, now comprising nearly 80% of the recent and projected growth of renewable electricity, represents one of the most significant land‐use changes of the 21st century. While PV facilities are critical for decarbonising energy systems, their large spatial footprint and infrastructure

On the decadal increase in the tropical mean outgoing longwave radiation for the period 1984-2000 [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2004
Abstract. In the present paper, we have calculated the outgoing longwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere (OLR at TOA) using a deterministic radiation transfer model, cloud data from ISCCP-D, and atmospheric temperature and humidity data from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis, for the seventeen-year period 1984-2000.

Rethinking Climate Change on the Role of Human Power Generation, Alternative Perspectives, Potential Solutions, and a Plea for Action

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
All energy matters Let us broaden the discussion on solutions to climate change. Greenhouse gases have upset the delicate equilibrium of the Earth's energy balance. Consequently, all sources of heat affect the temperature of the Earth. Although the amount of additional heat generated by humans is a fraction of that produced by the sun, it is generated ...
