The role of an interpreter is crucial in an ethnically diverse city such as Leicester. Four hundred and seventy-three patients attending the outpatient department were studied. The majority could speak English to some degree. Thirty-one (7%) patients required an interpreter. This was most frequently a family member (70%) or multilingual clinician (27%).
