Audit of endometrial biopsy at outpatient hysteroscopy

Background and aim:   Outpatient hysteroscopy (OPH) and endometrial biopsy (EMB) are less invasive alternatives to inpatient hysteroscopy and dilatation and curettage for assessment of the endometrium. Using local anaesthetic, the procedure is readily tolerated and can be completed in an ambulatory setting.

Side‐Effects and Complications of Outpatient Hysteroscopy

Summary: Outpatient hysteroscopy and biopsy was performed on 403 occasions. Complications were rare (<1%). Side‐effects occurred in 70% of patients but rarely required treatment. Preoperative explanation of the type, severity and frequency of side‐effects reduces patient anxiety at the time when side‐effects occur.

Abstract Hysteroscopic examination of the endometrium can be carried out as an outpatient procedure with no loss in diagnostic accuracy and at considerably lower cost than when done as a day-case. Cervical dilation is required in less than 20% of cases and only one-third of patients require local anaesthetic.
