Ovarian Cysts and Ovarian Cancer
InnovAiT: Education and inspiration for general practice, 2009Ovarian cysts and tumours are a relatively common finding among women of many ages, particularly with the wider use of regular physical examinations and ultrasound. Although the finding of an ovarian mass can be a source of considerable anxiety, most of those in younger women are not malignant and may be able to be managed entirely within primary care.

Before the introduction of ultrasonography (US), ovarian cysts in newborns were thought to be rare. With the extended use of real-time US, prenatal detection has increased. There is still considerable controversy regarding the best treatment of these neonatal findings.

The Author intends to compare the data available in literature on the topic of 'laparoscopic surgery of ovarian cysts' to his case material. From 1985 to 1994, the author carried out 920 laparoscopic operations for the removal of ovarian cysts. Of these, 13 were converted to laparotomies, mostly because of peri-adnexal adhesions.

Foetal and neonatal ovarian cysts have previously been considered uncommon. With the development of sonography, however, the detection of cysts has increased. As ovarian cyst formation in the perinatal period is a self‐limiting process, treatment options depend on the risk of complications and on the ability to differentiate these benign cysts from ...

This is a review of cases of ovarian cyst encountered in childhood in the Manchester children's hospitals. The patients presented with acute or recurrent abdominal pain or an abdominal or pelvic mass. The commonest cyst found was a teratoma, which was discovered because of its size or because of a complication.
