Probabilistic short term wind power forecasts using deep neural networks with discrete target classes [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Geosciences, 2018
Usually, neural networks trained on historical feed-in time series of wind turbines deterministically predict power output over the next hours to days.

Determination of notch stress intensity factors under mode I loading using the 3D-DIC and finite element over-deterministic methods

open access: yesEngineering Fracture Mechanics
In this paper, the fracture behaviour of Single Edge Notched Tension Specimens (SENT) is investigated experimentally and numerically using the three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) experimental method and the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technique, respectively.

Spreading Dynamics of Nanodrops: A Lattice Boltzmann Study

open access: yes, 2013
Spreading of nano-droplets is an interesting and technologically relevant phenomenon where thermal fluctuations lead to unexpected deviations from well-known deterministic laws.

Clean Up Behind You ‐ Novel Patterning Approach for Solid Immersion Lenses

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A focused ion beam (FIB) milling strategy enables rapid fabrication of solid immersion lenses (SILs) with smooth, debris‐free surfaces eliminating the need for post‐processing. The optimized pattern improves efficiency and surface quality. SILs containing NV centers are also investigated, confirming the technique's suitability for quantum and photonic ...

Framing the FRAM: A literature review on the functional resonance analysis method

open access: yesSafety Science, 2020
The development of the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) has been motivated by the perceived limitations of fundamentally deterministic and probabilistic approaches to understand complex systems’ behaviour.

Multi‐Scale Interface Engineering of MXenes for Multifunctional Sensory Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MXenes, as two‐dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, demonstrate remarkable capabilities for multifunctional sensing applications. This review systematically examines multi‐scale interface engineering approaches that enhance sensing performance, enable diverse detection functionalities, and improve system‐level compatibility in MXene ...

Deterministic encapsulation of single cells in thin tunable microgels for niche modeling and therapeutic delivery

open access: yesNature Materials, 2016
Existing techniques to encapsulate cells into microscale hydrogels generally yield high polymer-to-cell ratios and lack control over the hydrogel’s mechanical properties1. Here, we report a microfluidic-based method for encapsulating single cells in a ~6

Multi‐Functional ZnO–Te Heterojunction Devices Enabling Compact Frequency Quadrupler

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Wafer‐scale ZnO–Te heterojunction devices featuring tunable double negative differential transconductance (D‐NDT) are demonstrated at ≤ 200°C. Leveraging this unique characteristic, a single‐stage frequency quadrupler is realized, achieving a 64%–75% reduction in device count.

Synchronization of Chaos in Neural Systems

open access: yesFrontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, 2020
Multiple non-linear systems demonstrate the phenomenon where fluctuations enhance the synchronization and periodic behaviors of the system. In the phenomenon induced by stochastic additive noise, stochastic resonance, noise enhances the synchronization ...

Probabilistic Line Searches for Stochastic Optimization

open access: yes, 2015
In deterministic optimization, line searches are a standard tool ensuring stability and efficiency. Where only stochastic gradients are available, no direct equivalent has so far been formulated, because uncertain gradients do not allow for a strict ...
