The use of fractal dimension methods in clinical epidemiology: an application for postural assessment

open access: yesEpidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health, 2022
Background: this study considers the analysis of postural sway by comparing the use of a fractal dimension outcome (DBOX) with the usual sway ellipse area (SEA), calculated by the least squares method.

Quantum Optimization for Combinatorial Searches

open access: yes, 2002
I propose a "quantum annealing" heuristic for the problem of combinatorial search among a frustrated set of states characterized by a cost function to be minimized. The algorithm is probabilistic, with postselection of the measurement result.

Multi-band antenna for different wireless applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A small multi-band compact antenna is presented. The antenna is designed on Roger RT/duroid 5880 with dielectric constant 2.2, multi-band operations is achieved by inserting a slot on the top patch. The antenna has wide impedance bandwidth at 1.2, 1.6, 2.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Scaling in a Nonconservative Earthquake Model of Self-Organised Criticality

open access: yes, 2001
We numerically investigate the Olami-Feder-Christensen model for earthquakes in order to characterise its scaling behaviour. We show that ordinary finite size scaling in the model is violated due to global, system wide events.

Framing the UK’s counter-terrorism policy within the context of a wicked problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Terrorist attacks can be seen as the ultimate wicked problem. After 9/11, terrorists moved from so-called ‘spectacular’ events to relatively low-intensity attacks against individuals and groups. The emergence of what has become known as the ‘home-grown’

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...
