Journal of Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems
The paper considers an inverse problem and a direct problem for the Burgers equation in a domain with movable boundaries. With the help of an additional condition, a formula is obtained for determining the desired function from a direct problem for the ...

Pluralism, Causation and Overdetermination

The Overdetermination Argument Revisited
Minds and Machines, 2004In this paper I discuss a famous argument for physicalism – which some authors indeed regard as the only argument for it – the “overdetermination argument”. In fact it is an argument that does not establish that all the entities in the world are physical, but that all those events that enter into causal transactions with the physical world are physical.

Overdetermination and Obligation
2021Abstract This chapter is concerned with circumstances where a person’s act makes no difference to the occurrence of a negative outcome, but is a member of a group of acts that does make such a difference. In the light of an analysis of these circumstances, it argues against two familiar ideas.

The Korteweg stress tensor has been the object of considerable interest recently since it provides a purely mechanical approach to the problem of liquid-vapor phase equilibria independent of various thermodynamical assumptions. Here we show that, unless rather special conditions are satisfied, the only physical phase boundaries which are consistent ...

An Overdetermined Schwarz Alternating Method
SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 1996Developing modern extensions of the Schwarz alternating method (SAM) has been a primary focus in the research of domain decomposition during the past 10 years. Among the various research efforts, the generalized Schwarz alternating method (GSAM) was an attempt to use the Robin condition\[ \omega u + (1 - \omega )\frac{{\partial u}} {{\partial n}} \]on ...

Dialectics and Overdetermination
2017Marx wrote that he used a dialectical method he had extracted from Hegel. Arguing the impossibility of divorcing Hegel's dialectic from his idealism, Althusser proposed overdetermination as an alternative materialist framework. This chapter begins with Hegel's dialectic before turning to Marx's use of it and then to overdetermination as it was proposed
