Defense heterosis as a novel plant protection strategy: From theory to breeding practice

open access: yesNew Plant Protection, EarlyView.
Defense heterosis, the enhanced disease resistance of hybrids compared to their parents, has evolved from early observations of hybrid vigor to a novel research concept. Advances are now clarifying its diverse genetic and molecular mechanisms across various plant–pathogen interactions.

Genome-wide patterns of polymorphism in an inbred line of the African malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Anopheles gambiae is a major mosquito vector of malaria in Africa. Although increased use of insecticide-based vector control tools has decreased malaria transmission, elimination is likely to require novel genetic control strategies.

A century of theories of balancing selection

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Traits that affect organismal fitness are often highly genetically variable. This genetic variation is vital for populations to adapt to their environments, but it is also surprising given that nature – after all – ‘selects’ the best genotypes at the expense of those that fall short.

More evidence for widespread antagonistic pleiotropy in polymorphic disease alleles

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
IntroductionMany loci segregate alleles classified as “genetic diseases” due to their deleterious effects on health. However, some disease alleles have been reported to show beneficial effects under certain conditions or in certain populations.

QTL Mapping and Heterosis Analysis for Fiber Quality Traits Across Multiple Genetic Populations and Environments in Upland Cotton

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
An “immortalized F2” (IF2) population and two reciprocal backcross (HSBCF1 and MARBCF1) populations were constructed to investigate the genetic bases of fiber quality traits in upland cotton across four different environments.

Defusing Ideological Defenses in Biology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Ideological language is widespread in theoretical biology. Evolutionary game theory has been defended as a worldview and a leap of faith, and sexual selection theory has been criticized for what it posits as basic to biological nature.

Genomic Analysis of Inbreeding Depression on Productive Traits in Rubia Galega Beef Cattle Breed

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In autochthonous livestock breeds with small populations, such as the Rubia Galega from Galicia (Spain), mating between relatives is common and can lead to inbreeding depression. Genomic inbreeding coefficients were estimated for 4984 animals using ~63,000 SNPs to assess inbreeding depression in four key traits: age at first calving (AFC) with

Casein SNP in Norwegian goats: additive and dominance effects on milk composition and quality

open access: yesGenetics Selection Evolution, 2011
Background The four casein proteins in goat milk are encoded by four closely linked casein loci (CSN1S1, CSN2, CSN1S2 and CSN3) within 250 kb on caprine chromosome 6.

Full‐length coding sequence analysis of the voltage‐gated sodium channel and acetylcholinesterase genes reveals target‐site mutations and acetylcholinesterase gene duplication in housefly (Musca domestica) populations in Japanese livestock barns

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
We simultaneously analysed insecticide resistance mutations in VGSC and AChE using NGS and hybridization probe capture in houseflies collected from livestock facilities for the first time. Resistance mutations in both VGSC and AChE were detected in most wild populations, suggesting widespread distribution of resistance genes.
