Clonidine Overdose

A case of acute intoxication in a 60-yr-old woman who ingested 20 mg of clonidine is presented. The patient showed CNS depression (bradycardia, hypotonia) with systemic hypertension and peripheral vasoconstriction. She was treated with atropine and sodium nitroprusside. There was no recurrence and the patient recovered in 8 days.

Moclobemide overdose

Abstract. Moclobemide is a recently introduced short‐acting, selective and reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor, type A, with few and mild side‐effects at therapeutic doses. Fifteen reported cases of moclobemide overdose were studied in detail and are presented here.

Omeprazole overdose

The clinical features and pharmacokinetics of omeprazole in overdose have not previously been described. We report 2 cases. The major clinical features were flushing, tachycardia and headache. Omeprazole pharmacokinetics remained unchanged in overdose.

Minoxidil Overdose

A 52-year-old man ingested 60 ml of 2 percent topical minoxidil solution resulting in severe hypotension and tachycardia. He was resuscitated with intravenously administered crystalloid solution and treated with intravenously administered dopamine, resulting in a partial hemodynamic improvement.

Pentazocine overdose

A patient who ingested 1.5 g pentazocine developed status epilepticus, coma, respiratory depression, acidosis, profound hypotension, and ventricular arrhythmias. Although this patient survived after institution of general supportive measures, she did not respond to usual doses of naloxone.

In contrast to general intensive care units, the neurosciences ICU admits fewer cases of incidental overdoses with illicit or prescribed drugs than cases of adverse drug effects. Overdoses of illicit drugs can be seen in conjunction with traumatic brain injury and anoxic-ischemic injury.
